No point in polishing finer than 320 grit as the rusting process etches the surface. And if you go to a ultra fine polish the rusting solution will pool and not stick to edges... I've used a ultra...

heres my setup
short black iron tank for handguns, long black iron tank for, well long guns.. back stainless for heated cleaning/ boil out tank,, upper stainless tank , final oil dip...

these "light" 375 grain "plinking loads" ( Lyman #501680 cast from straight wheel weights & 12.5 grains of unique @ a little over 1000fps ) had no problem going through this 5 inch thick sapling at...
