I have found that most of my 85% density powders shoot as well as the Goex.
BUT , that is when you measure by Weight and not volume .
But I no longer shoot BP Cartridge or C&B revolvers any more ....

I had him reline a .54 Renegade barrel for me with a 1-66 twist.
It shoots very well with RB’s , but I have not tried any slugs yet.
But I did shoot it with 230 gr .45acp lead boolits in a sabot....

@ Lead Chucker
Your 65 grain weight compared to 80 grains of volume is around 81% density.
That isn’t too bad.
And like I said, if that powder is made with the TP charcoal , it might be less...

From what I have found is,
Powders like Swiss or Goex weigh almost exactly what the numbers say on the powder measures.
I set my measure on 100 grain setting.
Then I fill it with my home made...

I worked on a friends Indian Musket that was having similar issues as yours.
I drilled and tapped the barrel and installed a flash hole liner.
That way we could play with the flash hole size and...

The next batch of TP BP that I am doing today is a little different.
Since the TP charcoal is so light , and the volume so big , I am mixing a batch with 78/ 12 / 10 ingredients.
I hope it goes...

I just always leave him a message. Then he does return my call when he has time.
But I am retired. So I usually am available to take his calls whenever he has time to call me back .

I notice that the TP charcoal smells more like burnt cotton and paper.
So far , I think it will work good in my BP.
But the TP charcoal is not something I would press into charcoal briquettes to...

I have several Lee Buckshot molds.
I cast the buckshot out of wheel weight lead or range lead just to be cheap.
But I have cast a few out of linotype. But it doesn’t need to be that hard of lead ....

Today I decided to compare the weight of different charcoals that I made.
I measured equal 3/4 measuring cups of each charcoal powder.
Here are my results .
Soft maple charcoal - 2.6 oz.

I bet the bands did loosen when the rifle fell.
But the barrel could have dented into the wood as well causing the extra space.
If you do competition with it, you do have several options to make it...

Very cool rifle.
I feel that I am too old to get back into forging my parts.
But I still hand make certain parts like locks from spare misc parts.

When I have a barrel refurbished or modified,
When I get it back. I stamp the information as to what year it was done, who did the work plus the caliber and twist rate . I stamp it on the bottom of...

I feel the 1:60 or 1:66 would be your best choice
But ship your barrel with a note as for what your intents are for what you want to shoot.
All the barrels Hoyt has done for me are perfect...

I have a RCBS rotary shell tumbler.
It doesn’t work for a powder tumbler
It just isn’t powerful enough.
But it works for tumbling brass well

Brass balls would be great.
I don’t have my foundry any more or I would cast myself up some .
They are available. , but EXPENSIVE

Congratulations HG
You are the first one to be on page 400 of this thread .
I am not that concerned about my Hard lead balls leaving too much lead in my powder.
But then I cast the balls out of...

Today I made a half pound of BP with that cheaper TP that I made a couple days ago.
After pressing it into pucks , and before it was totally dry , I tested some chunks.
So far it looks like one of...

I think that you can use Any brand of toilet paper and you will get good BP.
But same as using wood.
Each will perform just a tiny bit different.
Even all wood from the same tree,
Or how you...

So far,
I have found that TP makes very consistent Charcoal.
It is very light and turns to Air Fly very easily.
It is consistent with the Charcoal that I made out of Balsa Wood before .
But a lot...

Using the toilet paper is really nice.
The paper is so consistent that you can almost set a time on cooking it as long as your heat is consistant.
My TP cooks perfect in 45 minutes to one hour ....

I use to build lots of those boxes.
But that was way back when Good wood was really cheap.
I built most of mine with glass or plexiglass lids for display .

I do lots of glass bedding on my Hawkins and Renegades so the stock matches the barrel perfectly.
I would think bedding would be your best choice .
But , not if you shoot in vintage competition....
