    Thanks all that responded. I had a little better luck with a large cool-whip container and less paint, They still needed 2 coats. Im done for a while.

    I glued 2, 1/2" X 6" poplar boards together, then just laid out the spacing I wanted. Drilled the holes with a 5/8" Forstner bit. Sanded and sprayed on a few coats of varathane.
