I glued 2, 1/2" X 6" poplar boards together, then just laid out the spacing I wanted. Drilled the holes with a 5/8" Forstner bit. Sanded and sprayed on a few coats of varathane.

Made a loading block for 45-70. Varathane applied and drying now.
