If hunting with cast, I like the .45-70 with wide meplat bullets. I usually load them hot, but there’s no reason why you couldn’t load them to trap door velocities. 405 grains at 1300-1400 fps.

44 special with some skeeter loads would be plenty effective, I’d imagine.

I’m a bit partial to large meplats. I’d go for the largest diameter possible at a reasonable velocity. If you haven’t read it already, John Linebaugh has a great article about the 45 colt and all...

I’d start with a .310 or .315 and different patch thickness to see what it likes. Good luck!

It gives great ballistics from what I can tell, but have heard a lot about finicky ignition, especially in cold weather.

Ideal placement would have been 4” or so lower. That being said, perfect shots don’t always happen and it worked out in the end.
