I bought a CVA hunter when Iowa legalized the use of straight wall cartridge's a few years ago. I found the CVA was cheap and I had 45-70 reloading gear. I came up with almost the same load as you...

I my-self use the LEE 347-340 Boolit, PC'd to .459, 45.5 GR 3031 .05GR Dacron filler, out of my CVA hunter. All I can say it kills everything I have pointed it at so far and a bit easier on this old...

None, my wife will not eat it, so feeds my buddy whos property I hunt, he can no longer work. Let me just say, all these people who think these folks are getting rich on disability must not know one....

I have a Blackhawk in 45 colt I have been wanting to take a white tail with, here in Iowa, for years. My hinderance is not Boolit load or cylinder throats (doug guy fixed that) but the nut pulling...

I use the Lee 340GR, .457 Boolit, PCd to .459, 30:1. This is over 43 gr of 3031 with .5 gr dacron. I find this easy on my shoulder and nothing has survived it yet.

I'm happy they did not remove the rifle I have used since they allowed straight walls, 45-70, it just kills. I am amazed the .35 Whelen made the list. If I were a younger man I would put one...
Anything less than .358 and my P1 Walter leads big time

Looking though load manuals I would guess 1500 FPS or so. I could have been definite if I did not put a (big o'l hole) in my chrony

WC870. All i can say, it "just works". I have had it for 3 season's now pulled the trigger 5 times with 4 deer on the ground

I also downed a buck and a doe with my CVA hunter. My load was the lee 340g, powder coated to .459, over I think 35 gr 3031 and .5 gr Dacron. Buck was a double lung shot and went about 40 yards with...

I did not bring up the hypocrisy of the .450 vrs 45-70 comparison. I would hate to give them any ideas of screwing others out of their chosen caliber.

Yea, sent off my displeasure with the list the other day as I bought a riffle (CVA 45-70 hunter), just to because it was on the original list. Needless to say, I will not be happy and my wife less...

My father had the idea "you start with a single shot" this was like others have stated, so you slow down and pick your shot. 50 years later I have autos, bolts, doubles along with my various...

Killed a deer with mine (still in 8x56R) a few years back when we had a late, antlerless, high power season, for the lower 2 counties here in Iowa. Sadly this went away so no loner can use it but as...

Hunter, in 45-70 with the optima thumbhole for me. I have had it for 2 Iowa straight wall seasons and has been up to the challenge of filling my tags both years.

Two dead deer in two seasons, I have no complaints. $200 got me into Iowa straight wall hunting with-out a divorce.

light load of 3031, with a tuft of Dacron for me (old Larry Gibson load). This has worked for 2 deer in 2 years, one bang flop and one 15 yard run, Accurate out to 200 yds (furthest I have tried it).

I was bitten by the old black powder cartage gun bug a few years ago, so have a few around the same date, all in the 1870s. Vetterli, Beaumont, Swedish RB, and a Snider. I do load for a 3 others my...

I shot a big bodied but small rack buck on Saturday with my 45-70 CVA. I used the lee 457-340RF, powder coated to .459, 32.5 gr of 3031, .5 gr dacron. Should be traveling, 14-1500 fps, recoil is very...

Ok you guys that have more machining experience than I, what do you know about this lathe. I am somewhat mechanically inclined and would like to teach my-self some basic machinist / gunsmithing...

Popper, just to look cool or if one come's up and licks me in the face, might take that shot. All, thanks for your response's. I may just keep things as they are and carry the CVA 45/70 only. It's...
