Ok so why not use a release agent all the time?

Ok I see tons of conflicting info on whether a release agent is necessary or not, and several thing suggesting they're bad for the mold and cast quality. I'm hoping someone can help clear this up...

I have a 6-cavity Lee mold on the way and just rec'd my Lyman handles which it says are for 2-cavity Lyman molds. Will this not fit Lee 6-cavity molds? I think my molds will be delivered in 1-2...
