Couple problems. Cast iron doesn't expand like steel, therefore the steel may crack the cast iron as different expansion rates when heated. So many different kinds of cast iron, some are very good...

I save mine till I get a 5 gal pail. then sell to the recycler or trade him for lead.

I have lead stored in 55 gal barrels, 30 gal barrels, 5 gal pails, wood boxes, on the floor. Wherever I have space out of the way. I make shot so I have a large accumulation.

Check out this video of a oasis setup. Making shot is a good hobby.
Biggest problem with making shot is having a constant supply. Mining berms, making friends with scrapyards, tire shops, roofers, house remodelers all take time. Plus online auctions, craigslist,...

I have a magma cast master 90 lb pot. I use it for everything. I clean all my wheelweights, range scrap, lino/mono, and make 85 lb lots for shotmaking. Anything bulk. After doing the "dirty...

Last time I sold zinc, I too got more than scrap lead price. Go figure.

I am of the planer chips/dust collector crowd. Fine dust is good but chips last a little longer. I really like it when melting down range scrap or anything dirty. Seems to collect the dirt better,...
Well I finally did it. 81 lbs of shot. O, none, nada rejects!!! 100% keepers!!
Here is my setup. On top is a Magma 90 lb bottom pour pot. Temperature is set at 630. I can set it to continuous pour or pour manually. I do batches of 75-80 lbs at a time

Made a batch of 8 shot on Saturday. 155 lbs of #8's. 1 oz of rejects, Almost perfect!!
Since you have 18,000 of them, i would cut one in half lengthwise. Should tell you all you need to know of taper vs straight, paper vs plastic base. Put the next one through your reloader and...

I believe it is dirt that was imbedded in the lead from hitting the backstop and stopping in the sand. Get a lot of that from berms. You're not losing any lead. Toss it and don't worry.

Should weigh 100-120 lbs. figure about 80%lead when done melting. I always liked truck weights, higher % of lead per bucket. I would be all over that if it is truly all lead wights.

If you have barrels with polygonal rifling, they will lead like crazy. Please check your barrels before proceeding any farther. Glocks have been known split barrels and worse.

Huskerguy is spot on. 65-70% by weight will be your recovery from a berm. Indoor range should be closer to 70-75%. You will have some bullets that are complete FMJ that will not release the lead...

I may be blind, but where does GM-3 Vectan fit?

1. double check that you have the correct case feed bushing. Make sure the bushing is centered every time. I had it one time where it didn't center, just need a little lube and TLC.
2. I am...

Your lead is too pure. You need to add some Linotype (or other harder lead) to it to make it flow better. You get your best shot from COWW. I know hard to get. I use the lead alloy calculator and...

The only use I have for it is on the lip of my shotmaker. Works great for that.

Send a sample to BNE. Find out what it truly is. There might be some who would want it. Your mistake was heating to 942 degrees. keep under 700 degrees and zinc can't get melted into your mix.
