Thanks for the encouragement. Nice to know that this will work if I do my part correctly.

Very nice. Filed in my cerebral junkdrawer in case I need it one day. May do it simply because it seems that handle is less likely to get hot.

Wait till the ammo craze is over... When Jim Shmuck Everyday can sleep at night without cuddling his black rifle, and he can buy ammo at Walmart again, lots of stuff will be for sale.

Moved this here as the other thread was begun more as a questioning of the idea. Decided to go ahead and try it. The main purpose of this is to end up with a smelting pot whose bottom never exceeds...

As of right now.

Well I take back the panel mount plug being expensive, found decent price at Auberins. Of course I ended up spending $60 anyway because that box was so much nicer than the gutted computer psu I have...
Forum: Casting Equipment
Hm. Those panel mount tc plugs are spendy aren't they? ooh well, pony up!

Hm. Tin lessens shrinkage. Got it, thanks for the tip!

jmorris I remember reading the thread on that when I was but a lurker. Awesome setup there. Maybe one day I'll have a go at an auto caster. Right now time spent casting and loading governs the $ I...

Oh, I'm expecting it. Shouldn't be a big deal, though. Cuss and lap.
Forum: Casting Equipment
Yes. I'm fully aware of what a pid is. Mistyped, meant tc in nut. If I put the tc in the melt then the bottom will get hotter than that. Tc should be nearest heat source you intend to cap the temp...

I'm sure it would take a while with the low delta t. hoping that I can get good enough conduction to keep it from being too bad. Have pid and element on the way from evilbay. Decided on steel pot. I...

Using wheel weights. Water dropped because back when I cast those I didn't know better. Ones from the other day are air cooled. Raining like hell today so I imagine I'll lube them up today.

My point with the electric smelter was to never let the bottom of the pot exceed 700*F. Therefore no sorting required before smelt. Maybe pick out stick ons if you wanted.

Well this guy seemed to have good luck with a stove element. Basically what I've got in mind + engineered stand and PID control.

I was just having thoughts along these lines myself. 8" round of 3/16 welded in to flatten off the bottom would work and could get more capacity. I can save my dutch oven for chile. Steel would...
Forum: Casting Equipment
Cylindrical element would be nice wattage wise. Would have to build a steel pot though. Biggest pipe I have laying around here is somewhere around 5.5OD x 1/4Wall. Not really as big as I wanted,...
Forum: Casting Equipment
Hm. Perhaps something simpler? Like a large PID controlled hotplate? Could even remove the lead pot and put the big 40gal crawfish pot on it then! :redneck:

Well I ran my new Lee 4-20 yesterday and cast about 200 of these bullets. Now diameter seems to be holding fairly constant, though reading between .451-.452. (Cheapo calipers usually used for OAL)...

Duly noted on the cracking. I know CI can successfully be brazed or welded with a slow ramp up and down in temperature, I'll have to look into it. Already have a cast iron 5qt dutch oven with a flat...

Check my thinking here guys.
Flat bottom cast iron pot with a stove element brazed to the bottom along with a brazed K TC. PID control set to 700 along with some insulation should prevent melting...

I can see where ES would be more useful for shooting. With a large enough sample you will know that "all" velocities will fall within this range. If "all" shots count then there you go, you have to...
