I finally managed to find a Ruger No.1 in 450/400. I had passed on one few years back, swearing to not let it happen again.
I have always wanted to hunt Africa and might just get a chance soon. ...

Well done, with a favorite combo. A tremendously satisfying feeling I bet.
You really want to see the Whelen shine...shoot heavy for caliber....go 250 to 310 grain. Why shoot 200 grainers in both, they will do the same thing.

I have owned my Whelen for more than 30 yrs now. Mauser 98 Action, Kreiger Stainless Cut rifled barrel with a 1-in-12 twist. McMillan stock and a Parker Hale trigger.
I have been casting now for...

That's why you should use LIQUID lanolin and not Anhydrous...Anhydrous is the solid form of lanolin.

That is a great round in the 35 Whelen. I have a mold that casts a very similar bullet called the 360 Thumper from NOE molds. IMR 4831 makes it a tack driver

49 grains of IMR 4831 gave nice low pressures a nice slow start and was deadly accurate

You won't be disappointed. Moose and bear medicine for sure

Yes...you are correct. Wicked accurate, and you'll be hard pressed to ever recover one from
Game...or an earthen berm
ATR....can you post a pic of the 260 grainer please?
These loads were shot out of a Ruger Hawkeye, stainless laminate, with a 1 in 12 twist rate. 32 was the sweetspot.
That was only 50 yds...it was the first set of loads with that bullet.
H4895 is a good choice in the .358 with that bullet weight. 1800 plus with very good accuracy.

Whelen....did you ever see results at the Range with the round seated deeper?

If you can get your hands on Unique...you can get many more loads per pound than any other powder and get to the desired velocity. A 16 grain load will get you very near 1300 fps and you can get 437...
Bringing this old post back to life, as the classic round and bullet need to stay alive.
35 Shooter....have you done anymore with the round and tried other powders?
If you have some IMR...

Steve.....the Thumper has drawn blood. I sent a box to an acquaintance who asked to try some in his rifle. He blanked last fall but took a nice fat whitetail buck this year. He hit the deer a...

Jim......post some pics of the cast rounds when you get a chance and let us know how they shoot. I'm betting 30-34 grains of H4895 is going to be a good combo
