My book says that 205 grain with 1 in 36 should work fine. So a 1 in 24 should be fine also.

Most original 44-40 rifles had a 1 in 36 twist. TJ's liners has 1 in 24 and 1 in 18"

Looking through my barrel pile I found a cadet barrel marked 32 Special and another one marked 32-20 and one that has not been messed with.

I picked up a Cadet action and wood several years ago and went the other way, it's now a 32 S&W with an octagon barrel. It's almost like shooting a 22 LR with a little more knock down power.

From what I have read the "special" was designed for loading with smokeless or black, same for the 38 Special. I have had many winchesters come in with a inch cut off the barrel to try and get them...

Try Jim Carpenter 208-582-2091. He bought Orion barrel company about 20 years ago and make good barrels at a decent price.

you can always stub another barrel to it or line it. H&R also made the same rifle in 30-30. I heard of a few that were re-chambered to 223 and they still didn't shoot well. Problem is, it would cost...

Looks like it's time for a new barrel. A liner will work but the fastest twist is 1 in 14". Most of the original barrels are 1 in 16" which will only stabilize the 45 grain bullets. Early Winchester...

It may shoot OK. Slug the bore and see what size you have. Most have a .379 groove when they are in good shape but I have seen a few that are out to .381. Size your boolits to .001" over grove...

I have a high wall and a roller in 38-55, both are great and don't hurt my shoulder. According to the book you can use the same loads in your 38-50. Next build will most likely be a 32-40 on a high...

My first homemade pistol used match heads for powder and the white tip was my percussion cap. It was a 50 caliber smooth bore and had quite a kick to it. Some of the other kids were making spoke...

If your planing on using smokeless powder you have too much room in the case. Black powder loads will work fine. I think I have the reamer for the 45-110. 45-90 would be a little easier on the...
