In a Marlin, the 45-70 can be loaded a bit hotter than the .444. In my 26" 1895CB I can push a 405gr bullet to 2100fps and it's not even a Max load. There are no .444 loads that can touch that energy.

Easily the .45 Colt. I have rifles in both calibers and while the .357 is one of my favorite plinking guns, the .45 hits harder past about 50 yds and if you cast your own bullets the difference in...

Another vote for the 170gr pill. The trajector difference is insignificant at 30-30 ranges but the 170gr bullit passes the 150 energy wise beyond 100yds and gives the 30-30 about 50 more yards of...

I found a box of their 100grFP in .32 cal at a pawn shop a while back and picked them up for a good price. I checked the hardness on a few and they averaged an 18 BHN. That's just a little harder...

I generally don't use guesses wild or otherwise when I'm offering reloading advice. Water dropping (which I also do) is actually just case hardening the surface of the bullet and once you size the...

One thing that you might consider is to weigh your bullets after you cast them. I use that same bullet and I probably have more molds for 44mags than any other bullet but the 310gr RNFPGC is my...

The reason that you can't find a mold for the bullet that you want is that there is no practicle application for it. Most folks that load for big bore, high energy rounds want a heavier bullet to...

Your alloy sounds a little soft for the pressure of a full power 454casull load. That mixture would be in the neighborhood of 7 or 8 BHN and is kinda on the cusp of being too soft for that velocity....

I'd like to think that if you know your formula, then you would know what your hardness should be. How fast are you pushing what weight and style of bullet?
Forum: Cast Boolits
If you separate the clip-on and stick on wheel weights when you smelt them, you'll have two different hardnesses to alloy with. I get 22bnh from water quenched clip-on wheel weights which is plenty...
I would say it's safe. Especially in a Ruger. I've loaded a lot of shotshells for my 44's and I have a preference for the Speer shot capsules. Loaded with #9 shot, the capsules average 143gr's and...

One thing I forgot to mention is that when you cut the hulls real short, you have to thin the end of the hull wall a bit as it gets progressively thicker as you get to the base. The hull will bulge a...

I'm more impressed with gaining more velocity without gaining more pressure.
I've built up a few shotgun loads totally away from any published data (both slug and shotshell) and have found that safe and acceptable varies a bit. Shotguns don't give as conspicuous a pressure...

I just checked my load book and I mis-spoke earlier. It was 1-1/8oz of #4 shot at 1300 fps. It's a trimmed Rem hull, a trimmed Federal champion wad,(cut at the lip right below the shot cup) 21gr of...

About 20 years ago I was very heavily into USPSA 3-gun shooting and people were always looking for a way to get an edge. Some friends of mine and I experimented with making short shotshells so that...

Quite a few years ago I reloaded a handful of 44 rem mag cases and they worked just fine. I loaded them hot with some cast 240gr SWC's just to see what they would do. Back then they were all berdan...

Randy Garrett of Garrett Cartridges wrote a blurb on his wesite about some penetration tests that he did comparing the 45-70, 458win mag, and the 458 lott. In wet newsprint, the 45-70 at 1500fps...

Being new to this forum and relatively new to casting seriously, I'm kinda suprised at how few of you use thermometers. I don't have a large amount of experience to fall back on even though I've had...
