I've done what you are thinking, with my 40-50 SBN.
Checked a couple dies just now and a 8X57 seat die is just a touch tight, but a 40-60 seat die is really close.
If you have a bunch of dies for...

I was thinking breach seating would alleviate that problem, but I remember Bruce talking about wanting his powder height to be the same in all loads before compression.
Forum: Black Powder Paper Patching
Makes a guy think a few custom cartidges from Rocky Mountain Cartridge would be a good investment if he can't find a good load with his current brass.

Jim's quest for Brass in the swapping section got me to thinking about the missing variable in a lot of our load testing. Something I've been experimenting with a little more of lately.
We test...

May work for single wrap experimenting or over primer wads. Might even work in lesser caliber smokeless loads, but never having use 24 lb cotton I'd be remiss to give any advise on its usability

I have only shot this bullet in a 40-82, but the 403415E is a tack driver in it with a fast twist barrel.
It's a Dual diameter paper patch bullet.
It has a bit more Major diameter so you seat it in...

Didn't realize you made it out Kurt.
Wanted to run down but just couldn't make it.

Congratulations fd. Glad you were able to take it home. Hopefully they will get all the bug's out for next year and everyone shooting paperpatch gets signed up.
Forum: Black Powder Paper Patching
thanks for that update.
that puts them somewhere between 39th and 50th.
Still waiting for Al K. to let me know who it was.

Quickest way to find out. Is take a piece of brass that fits in it, fill it full of black powder, put a couple wads on top and fire it. You should be able to see what's going on then.
Or smokeless...

Thanks.
I think I'm going to try switching some of my current loads to .060 ldpe and see if it works as well. I have 2 currently using them.
Forum: Black Powder Paper Patching
That was not a slam Don. It was a simple observation. Nothing wrong with the .060 veggie. But if that is where you start loads it could be why the .451 works but the .454 doesn't for you.
That was...
Forum: Black Powder Paper Patching
That would explain a lot. My go to wads for my loads has always been a .030 veg under a .030 ldpe. once in a while I'll start a load out on .060 ldpe just cause I got so many and need to use them up....

I'm wondering ??????????????????????????????
Don's big claim is, the lead has no place to go, therefore it has to cause finning if the bullet is too big.
If the only thing that happens is the...

Jim,
I looked at your numbers again.
I find it interesting that you are taking a bullet .003 over bore and patching it to .003 over groove Dia. Even I woulda thought " well that will never work"...

First time I wrapped a bullet and it hit the target I was hooked. Didn't care that I'd shoot a good match then crater at the next, that was what I was going to shoot. Since I started with patched to...

That's why, after studying the habits of most paperpatch shooters this winter, I'd never recommend paperpatch to anyone. Everybody that wants to try it does just that. Try it. So they throw a load...

Thanks Jim.
Only smokeless I've tried with PP was Blackhorn and it didn't need neck tension.
I'm using 12.5-1 with my Black powder. Gave me lots better results than 16-1 but I'm patching right at...

Sorry for ruining your thread FG. Glad arnie got you squared away.

And I don't need to go to a paper match to learn that a .454 bullet shoots fine in a 450 bore. Evidently flatsguide didn't need to either.
Maybe paper matches aren't all they are cracked up to be...

You win Don. Us gong simpletons aren't smart enough to know that bouncing a bullet in to the white don't mean this ain't just the most accurate gun we'd ever seen.
Do you really think we are that...

And don't get me wrong. I'm not saying .451 can't be made to shoot accurately. I can only attest to what I have shot accurately and Ive shot quite a few different +.004 bullets in different rifles...

We don't shoot paper targets.
We shoot gongs.
They are 48 inch targets.
The white bull is usually 30 inches.
I didn't say I can shoot every shot at every match in a 1 foot vertical. I said...
