I have found a minty 74 long rifle made in 1946. Mint bore. What should I be concerned about ? I've read that it's a horror to take down to clean.

A couple of thoughts:
1. the 7.62x54 headspaces on the rim not the shoulder.
2. why not stick with proven powders that have been essentially the same for decades like 4198/4895/4064 etc. ?

An M die does not enlarge the neck diameter beyond what is correct. The top part of the M die mandrel bells the case mouth to ease bullet seating. If the belling portion of the mandrel does not touch...

IME lead boolits do not "shed" metal after leaving the bore and gums up cans.

If there is residue in the can, step one is to figure out what it is. The ID of the can should be larger than the bore. PC coated boolits should be, after coating, sized to the same OD that works...

There are 2 different chambers.

The 1890 spec cartridge (dies only made by RCBS) which has smaller dimensions. Trying to size a fired case from a K31 is a bad idea. (guess how I know !)
