lead alloys can only tolerate a very small amount of zinc before they turn to an unusable oatmeal-like mush that won't cast and sticks to your ladle, pot, everything.

as i understand it, to gain hardness by water drop or with heat treating you need a small amount of arsenic. clip on wheel weights have some arsenic, not sure about range scrap.

This thread got me casting today, i ran a few with 50/50 = SOWW and that 98/2 Xray. Fill out was superb- these are some of the purtiest boolits i've cast in a while.

Many years ago my dentist gave me some, i asked him what the alloy was and his supplier told him 98% lead, 2% Sb/Sn (antimony/tin)
I smelted a little in my garage, didn't see the little alligator...
