How fast can I push a 2-2-96 357 bullet before I need a gas check design? Thinking of working up a cb load for my contender for this year. Using 145 swchp plain base in my 38 smiths that I love.

For those using shell media, like I do. You can save a bunch by going to Petsmart or any of the big pet stores and buying the shell iguana bedding.. Same stuff, works great, at 1/3 or less the price...

That came to mind..
As a fan of classic European sporting guns and importer (Classicsportingguns.com). I've done a lot of case forming for those obsolete calibers.. Some of them take several steps...

Yes, That's a fun little bullet. I used it in my 30-20TC

Of course you're right, and I've seen that for many decades of reloading. But the max I've seen is about that 10% difference extreme in your 357's. I'm getting 3 times the discrepancy from loads...

You have that right. 2 years ago I shot a boar with a crossbow. Looked to be a good hit, so I didn't re-cock, and trailed him, expecting him to be dead a few yards in. As I followed the blood...

Haha, depends on the reason he's climbing it.
I don't usually hun them with the 38, but carry it knocking around the woods and have killed quite a few with it.
That said, it's not the caliber....

Thanks, I'd appreciate it. I totally agree that punching paper only needs the most accurate. However, I use both these guns as woods carry to shoot wild hogs. And need a certain minimum performance...

I can't even come close to Pearce loads chronographed from his 4.5" revolver

That's about what I've decided, Just keep pouring in the powder til I get what I want... or start at max & work up:roll: I finally got a load over 800 today (barely) that's supposed to be Max and...

Thanks for all the great and thoughtful input. I started reloading in the early 60's, buying components and equipment from Herters. And anywhere else I could find it. Showing my age here :(. And...

Tried that with my 3" beretta 22 (975 fps) and ppk 380 (850 fps). Both seemed about right.

Thanks. I had that experience for the 50 years I've been loading (test bbl vs real guns 😊)
But even tried the loads claiming to have been clocked in revolvers with similar bbl length. The Pearce...

Is it just me, or is the published load data, way outside reality?
Been working on some 44 sp and 38 loads.. using mfr and other published data, I'm getting 25-30% lower velocities. 200 gr cast hp...

Anyone here use WR barrels for cast bullet shooting? I barreled a #1 in 30-30 AI last year with one & it shoots great (smokeless & jacketed). But the CB and or BPCR barrels may have a little...

Thanks Jessie, That's why I'm thinking of going with a .323 bore instead of the .321. Also, if I decide, down the road, to make a more serious hunting rifle out of it, I can always re-chamber it to...

I'm getting ready to barrel a browning 1885, that will be used 75% with BP and cast, and 25% smokeless & cast with an occasional jacketed bullet for laughs. I haven't shot all that much with cast...

An expedient for 9.3 bullets is to make an upsetting die to upset 35 cal bullets to 9.3. I know it's not casting :o) but works great. I couldn't find the lighter 9.3's that usually work better in...

I would say the frizzen is a carbon steel of some sort. stainless alloys haven't sparked very well for me; playing around with making a 440C firestarter and talking with the lock people.
You could...

As a Floridian, I can sure sympathize with that. I built a short fowler with a queen anne lock last year and decided to make the barrel from scratch (never again). ...

I don't dislike plastic stocks because they aren't traditional. I dislike them mostly because they are butt ugly  But, since yours is a flinter, I may give it a pass (IMO). As a gunsmith,...

The modern ML Vs traditional, debate always churns up strong feelings, as it has here. I love the traditional wood stocked rifles & smoothbores as well as shotguns, and that's my preference. I hunt...

Looks like most here prefer traditional ML's and I'm glad to see it. I like flintlocks & perc rifles & shotguns. Either originals or ones I've built in the "more or less" original patterns. One...

I have a Navy "magnum" 12 ga. Their manuals claim you can shoot all 10 & 12 ga loads in it & light 8 ga. No idea, I had to make new tumbler support plates for both locks. They were pot metal....
