Probably 4140 pre-hardened to 35-40 rc. Best bet would be to ask PTG. Shouldn't be a problem to cut, with properly hardened drills, reamers, etc.

I started with 4140PH, learned to cut my own threads, etc. You can make a D-reamer from drill rod, either 0-1 or W-1. I had so much trouble making a D-reamer for .224 dies that I finally ground one...

Forrest r, that's an even better idea than I first thought. It certainly helps make the process a lot less labor intensive. Have you tried feeding them through a bolt gun, or AR platform?

Also Caneman has several threads where he made his .224 dies and .30 dies. I have several threads on parts I've made to...

Garandsrus, thanks that's pretty much the conclusion I have come too. I've tried 3 different ways to turn it down and it has snapped off every time at .150-.165". Not worth setting up a steady rest...

Just tried to turn a piece of 1/2" W-1 down to 1/8" with a .221 base that was 3" long. I had it down to .165", but didn't think .028 was enough support between the shoulder of the base and the die. ...

I was working on my core seating die a few weeks back and thought I was a .219 ID. I figured I had better learn to pour some cores and try swaging them. Got that done, and today I tried seating a few...

Howard, thanks for the insight. I thought about making large cores and swaging wire, if they could be cut to accurate weights. I agree swaging the cores is a lot of extra steps and time consuming. ...
