Cratered primers are not always a sign of excessive pressure , it can also mean an oversize firing pin hole . I have bolt rifles that crater every round , from reduced loads to jazzed up hot stuff ....

There is no "rule of thumb" . Some folks say you need a full caliber of length of bearing surface in the neck ,that is a myth . Too many variables involved to throw a blanket statement over proper...

I want the utmost accuracy I can get , and I am also very hard on myself . For that reason I use 22 rimfire for fun only , not being in control of ammo quality drives me nuts .

Another vote for WD40 and 0000 steel wool .I keep my steel wool really wet with WD40 and wipe off the surface with a white rag as I go to see my progress . Good luck with your project .
