I'm no expert on synthetic grease, but I would guess that if there is a crunchy feeling in the last two inches of the barrel it's burnt up remains of whatever is in the grease, or possibly some kind...

I just happened to be surfing Cabelas and noticed the Pedersoli 1853 3 and 2 band rifles are marked down by $200.00... If I didn't already have one that's not a bad price.

I got out to the range yesterday, and with 311407 sized to .311 over H4198 in a range from 25 gr. to 27 .gr with 1 gr. of Polyfil got pretty good results, the best accuracy was with 25 gr. I had some...

That looks a lot like my sporter Krag. It's got an old set of Lyman sights on it.
Forum: CB Loads / Military Rifles
The bore on this particular Krag slugs approximately .301 X .309. Shot it yesterday with the 30-180 over 35 gr. H380. Groups were 2.5 inches or so at 50 yards.
I'm working up loads for the 311407...
Forum: CB Loads / Military Rifles
I have a few other molds that would drop bullets that would be appropriate, but I want to stick with the flat point as I may just take this Krag hunting. The 311407 does drop larger, so that's a plus...
Forum: CB Loads / Military Rifles
Well I started out with the 30-180 sized .310, and have moved that up to .311, so I'm going with .311 on the 311407 for this round. I can always go up if I don't get great results with that.

I have 2 Krags, One is a safe queen which I haven't got around to shooting yet, and a 'sporterized' Krag. I shot the sporterized Krag about a year ago with a RCBS 30-180 FN over 35 gr. of H380 (from...

Yep, in stock. Wonder how long it will be available.

I have used numerous powders and black; I currently use Blackhorn 209, which is a smokeless powder. Bulky - I fill the case with 37 gr., a 1/8" hard felt wad and a 405 grain boolit. Excellent...

I picked up a Lee Quick Trim die for 45 colt for $ 5.00. There's a slotted insert in there that I pressed out. There is a 45 degree cut that goes to a narrow straight cut. I measured it and found it...

I usually use 1/8" hard felt, and/or waxed milk carton paper on either side of a grease cookie when required. Felt can be purchased from Durofelt.com

As it was relatively warm and calm, I headed out to the range today to shoot the old Swiss Vetterli. I still have some issues to resolve as far as the case prep, namely neck reaming ( An adjustable...

The one was describing above happens to be a M78, but in two of my 69/71's 348 brass sized with the RCBS will fit, whereas 348 sized with the Lee dies does not... I got about 300 348 cases back...
Forum: Black Powder Cartridge
It seems odd that the Lee dies should produce a bad fit, if it was in all of a few rifles. I would want to both take a chamber cast and try smoked cases to see just where the area of contact was. One...

I bought a few of these several years back and initially slugged the bores cleaned them up and oiled them. I had been reading about converting them to centerfire, forming cases etc.

A few weeks ago I shot the cartridges I loaded up with .610 lead RB over 70 gr. of 2F. I had a 1/8" felt wad and two milk carton wads with a lube cookie, and a little shot buffer to fill the area...

I've never had any problems with it - good powder.
Forum: Black Powder Paper Patching
Yeah I looked at Meacham - thanks for the info. I'm not sure which die body will work for 577-450. The necks blow out to .473" and the OD is .502", so in order to get to say .458" my OD would have to...
Forum: Black Powder Paper Patching
Well I just came across some info that recommends the boolit be patched to either bore diameter or groove diameter. So I guess I'll have to size the cases anyways...
