I am looking for good books on old Winchester rifles, in particular the 1886 and 1894. Does anyone have a title they recommend?

I see and hear squirrels literally every time I am out at the deer stand. If I shot at them, I feel I would be scaring away the deer. I have been sorely tempted though, and at the end of the hunt...

Well, for those interested, I finally loaded some rounds for this old 1886.
40 grains of H4895 behind a pure lead 415-grain boolit sized to .460. Remington cases, CCI primers.
According to the...

I use one of Ken Waters' Pet Loads in my 99 year old 38-55.
32 grains of IMR 3031, 255 pure lead, powdercoated boolit, 1700 fps. I can hit anything I want with this load.

Thanks for the DIY ideas, but I think I'd rather just buy a nice one. With a house full of little kids, I'm lucky to get the time to reload ammo, nevermind begin leatherworking. Ha ha.

I agree with all the above.
I hunt only with cast in any rifle. Either 100+ year old rifles or modern - cast all the way.
1.) I love the mushrooming of a pure lead boolit in any target.
2.)...

I'm hunting with a few all-original Winchesters - 1886, 1894.
None of them have ever been modified and I have zero desire to drill a hole in the stock for an Uncle Mike's stud. At the same time...

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. A few things:
1.) I read Ken Waters' two articles on the .45-70, and he admonished to go easy on the old Winchesters, despite the strong design. The design can...

In another thread, I asked about the use of Trapdoor loads in my new-to-me 1890 Winchester 1886.
It was generally agreed that the load I picked - 40 grains of H4895 with a 405 would be fine with...

For those interested, this is the manual I read it in. It's page 107 of this pdf, which in the paper copy of the book is page 98.
A few things I see as I read it again - he said being a few...

When I asked my question, I overlooked this part, basically because...I can't shoot it if it doesn't chamber. I'd have to think that yeah, if you have to jam them in there, it isn't going to work,...

At this time, I would like to point out that I was using pure lead boolits when I tried this out. Obviously they would swage down to the size of the barrel a lot easier than an alloy might, and it...

I was reading through a 1940's vintage reloading manual written by Philip Sharpe, the Complete Guide to Handloading.
In it, he talks about sizing bullets, and he cited an experiment whereby...

You fellows have given me some good feedback. I feel considerably relieved about the strength of the rifle. It's in very sound, tight mechanical condition, so I think I should be fine.
With...

For any reduced load in my experience, my favourite ingredient in all regards is Unique gunpowder. All you need is a pinch to get the performance you want, so it's very cheap to use, and because...

I pretty much only hunt with vintage Winchesters. I very much dislike most modern rifles, and especially black plastic ones.
My main deer rifle is a 1917 Model 94 in .38-55 with a 26" octagon...

Thanks curator. You say "nickel steel" - didn't that come later than 1891 though?
I know that the rifle was made to handle up to 22,000 CUP rounds, but this was also a long time ago, so I was...

Hello,
I recently acquired a Winchester model 1886 from the year 1891. It's a .45-70 in excellent mechanical condition. It's not a "glass case" collector, as it's been hunted over the years, so...

I just ordered some and I'm at a bit of a loss for what I need.
They work outstanding in my Lee die - I just ordered the wrong size for everything. For instance, I size my .45-70 boolits to...

As a followup to this, I got in contact with Al at NOE molds.
He actually made me FOUR different plugs to the specs I asked for (and many extras, since they're all now listed on his site).
Very...

At least this kid at 22 was trying to cast some boolits. He had the patience to find some lead, molds, equipment, but did it wrong.
It seems to me that the OP got his back up at his PERCEPTION of...

I have no idea why you think changing powder would reduce leading.
A .45 ACP load at 800 fps or so that's leading probably has to be a fitment issue.
I would definitely pull a boolit and see...

You need a Lee Universal Expanding die to use the NOE plugs. All you have to do is insert one of the sizers in place of the tapered plugs that come with the die. You could size any case you wanted...
