The problem may not be related to the location of the hole. Are you using ffffg priming powder? Is the hole clear of any debris?

I have had the "lint" problem for several years. I spoke to my optometrist and he told me that older eyes do not open and let enough light to enter and that causes the problem. YMMV

I think you will find that you have an 1873 Trapdoor. The "3" is hard to read and is frequently misread as an "8". The 1873 model is considered by some to be more of a blackpowder rifle...
