It was an old Jeff Cooper brainchild. He believed in a multi-purpose rifle. The Ruger was released after his passing. Is it a true scout? That's a separate argument but it's a bit on the pricey side....

It is nearly identical to my 340. A few very minor differences. Sights, mount holes.....other than that it is the same.

I agree. I have a few nice long guns, but you can't beat the pleasure felt when you breath life back into an old classic like this.

I just couldn't see a modern optic sitting on top of this gem. Plus, that old Sears-Roebuck optic was a match made in heaven with this rifle.

It really cycles nicely with that 30-30 rimmed cartridge. Double extractors really grab the casing well. I couldn't agree more.

They are such well made guns. I plan on holding on to this one. Make a few more memories with it before handing it off to my son.

Awesome!! We hit it hard with the surf rods at Playalinda beach a week or so back. Playalinda is north of Kennedy Space Center, CF. Pompano were running and hitting sandfleas. Caught a few blues too!

I have a Savage 340. If it is anything like a Savage, it will be drilled for a mount on the left side of the receiver. Check Numrich. They have a mount that fits my Savage.

They are going to be refinements present in the big dollar guns that you won't see in the economy line. Exotic hardwoods, jeweling, hand checkering and so on. But that stuff doesn't make the rifle....

The Savage model 322, 325, 340 & 840 all came with pre-tapped holes drilled on the left side of the receiver. There about 12 holes altogether. There should be flat head threaded plugs screwed in to...

Just finished sanding/refinish on the stock. Barrel and action were a mess. Degreased, polish and a reblue.....She's ready for those CA black tails!

Savage makes a re-pop after market side mounted...

I just finished a Savage model 340 in 30-30 win. It was a mess when I got it. The quality that was present back in those days was really good.
