I'd stick with pure lead. With minimal contact between the ball and barrel, you'll want the ball to obturate as much as possible to engage the rifling and form a seal.

The only "concerns" I would have are:

1) Accuracy since there is not a lot of bullet engaging the rifling (only at the diameter)
2) Getting a decent crimp since it would have to be right at the...

Most of my lead (premelt) is at a BHN of 10-11 according to Staedtler pencil testing. For the first casts (ever), I'll probably shoot for a BHN of 13-14 using the alloy calculator on this site and...

Just hover your cursor over the menu bar in the Quick Reply window. The one that says "Insert Image" fourth from the right is what you're looking for.

The way around this is to load 454 cases at 45 Colt levels. Same with 357/38 and 44mag/spl. Downside like Johnnyflake said is that 454 cases are harder to find and more expensive.

I just finished up casting pewter ingots using a muffin pan with small diameter cups. Just covered the bottom of each cup and they weighed about 1.5 ounce each.

Only had the dial on my Lee 20lb...
