Wax as a lube?
Im in the proces of making/loading some cartridges with heeled bullets.
My usual BP lube works wonders but it's rather snotty and not suitable for outside lubing.
So i dug around and found info that the US Army used japan wax and bayberry wax as bullet lubes in the 1880's
Anyone has experience with this?

My lube is a blend of bees was and hard paraffin.
-
Many soy waxes are physically similar to Japan wax.
-
you could find some of both waxes.
I would just use a slightly modified bees wax.
like your B/P lube bumped up with 25-50% more wax.

the 577/450 was loade with as described beeswax wads under the bullet.
was it to act as a lube wad, or as a gas seal?
we know that british soldiers could fire many rounds dirty, but was this to do with powder quality, beeswax wads, or barrel type and dimensions?
certainly beeswax is quite brittle in the cold and quite malleable in hot weather.
some say the wax wads were to sweep the bore of previous fouling.
an interesting comundrum.
keep safe,
bruce.

I use a 1/4" straight B-Wax wad right on the powder with no other wads or paper in my 93 and 95 Marlin lever action rifles with black powder and a GG bullet. This lets me have fun at the range with out fouling out. The B wax wad right on the powder no matter what the outside temperature is does not contaminate the powder and the heat from the burning powder right on the wax wad leaves a lot behind in the bore.

As i said i have a BP lube that works a treat but it's rather snotty for outside lubing.
I want something that i can melt, dip my bullets in, and then the finished cartridge wont be a lint magnet.
