I loaded a few cases with gas checked bullets, but found that I had the wrong load. When I used a kenitic puller the gas checks came off inside the case. Were these checks too loose or is that normal.

If they don't crimp on like a old style bottle cap the way Hornady's & some others do, it kind of is pretty normal.
I've had a couple of Hornadys do it too if the boolit base is a bit too small,
or I didn't size them down as small as others. Like sizing to .0311 instead of .0309 or .0310
It is a fairly normal occurrence. If you need to remove the check, push down on one side and turn the check vertical in the neck, then pull out with needle nose pliers.
For me it's probably more often than not when the GC bullets are really crimped in. Luckily I don't have to pull very many bullets.
For homemade / Sage gas checks this is normal, It happens to me all the time to me. Push it in with sizing die and take it out with needle nose pliers sideways.

I had an idea on how to bond the GC to the boolit. Do your powdercoat shake, then apply the check before the bake.
This should bond it. Haven't tried it yet but I plan to.

I gave a box of loaded 3006 ammo that won't load into my pump action rifle because the bullet is to large and my rifle throat is to small. I started to pull the bullets and the checks will not come out of the case neck. All 250 rounds are sitting in a box until I know what do do with them. So it's a common problem my friend
Turn the gas check sideways inside the case just enough so you can grab the check with a small jewelers needle nose pliers and pull it out .
Some checks have a crimp onto the boolit feature and some don't ...these will sometimes slip off when pulling the bullet . No biggie , a dental pick , knitting needle , small needle nose pliers all can be used to "worry out " the pesky check . Be sure and dump the powder ...the first check I pulled out I forgot about and spilled the powder .... only did that once !

I’ve found that copper checks have a small amount of spring back which I noticed with some of my cast boolits with a little too small of bases. I annealed the checks which removed the spring but was an extra chore so I switched to aluminum checks that have no spring back, they work fine and seat tightly. I haven't tried to pull any of these boolits though. Give some aluminum ones a try. I got mine from Sarges.
Gas checks are designed for a specific shank dimension and overall diameter. Hopefully the mold is made right in the first place too! When I shot into old phone books my bullets kept most of the gas checks on even mushroomed out a lot. Many of the "problem" ones guys sent me over the years were under sized and sometimes with very hard mystery alloy's. I saw lots of 6.5's with .249 shanks. I made a Small Shank 6.5 mm for those. Lots of those 6.5 molds with small shanks out there sadly.
