I intend to mount a scope on my Encore using this base.

What height rings are recommended to allow for easy loading of the chamber and operation of the hammer?
I always try to mount the scope as low as I can.
LOL... I am the exact opposite… You have got to love a forum...
If you have a hammer extension, my advice isn’t near as pertinent.
If you use High Rings you will not have any problems sticking your thumb in-between the scope and the hammer. I have several Encore and Contender barrels and they all use this set up.
Just take it for what its worth…
I like a higher one also for the Contender. I've got fat thumbs.
We all do things differently, I am just trying to explain my way, (and it isn’t necessarily the “right-way.”)
I got use to putting high rings on my rifles because they all utilized 50mm objectives. I found it carried over well to short guns as well…

You should be OK with medium rings for your 40mm scope BUT you will need a hammer spur.

Also, if you're mounting Leupolds to Encores, this kit makes way more sense that one might think. You buy it once, and every scope thereafter is devoid of scope ring marks.

40mm you can get by with medium. anything larger, go with hi. I like the hi myself. The higher the more your cheek is off the stock.....
Ciose to the bore as I can get for me. Reduces the effect of cant.
A fellow called "Tree Stand" on e-bay makes some nice cocking pieces if you don't have a swing-hammer.
