Lino/lead alloy...

I have been experimenting with my alloys. I started by mixing 3-1 lead to lino with good results. Because I have limited amounts of lino, I eventually transitioned to a 4-1 mix and got equally good results. My estimates are that is approximately less than 1% tin and a bit over 2% antimony. Sized and lubed I get good accuracy and absolutely zero leading.

It would appear that provided bullets sized to bore and adequate lube, softer than usual alloys can work...

I just acquired a bunch of one lb ingots labeled 10-1 and assuming it is one part tin to 10 parts lead, I am wondering if I should try 2 lbs of lead to one 10-1 or perhaps get away with 3lbs of lead to one 10-1? Will the missing antimony make a huge difference?

i like the 3-1 lino it makes an excellent all around alloy.
the 10-1 cut in half would make 20-1 which is the same bhn as ww's but act's differently.
i have shot quite a few 20-1 alloy boolits and liked it in my revolver cartridges.
cutting it to 30-1 is a popular hollowpoint alloy and is pushed fairly hard with a gas check with good opening of the hollowpoint and excellent weight retention.
for quite some time remington and winchester used 40-1 alloy in thier factory 45 colt and like loads

You will still have as much antimony as the guys that mix their WWs 50/50 .

An alloy of 25-1 is my LHP alloy of choice. Cast great, runs to 1250fps w/o any appreciable leading, expands fantasticly.

If you mean for expansion, wet phone books. The ones around here are pretty decent thickness, about 2" dry. Soak em for 8hrs & duct tape them in stacks of 9"-12". A 12" stack stops most expanding bullets. Expansion in wetpack is sim to expansion in balistic gel & animals, although I recover very few bullets in game.

I made some up I plan on using it in my rifles 358 win and 30-30 win maybe the kids 35 Whelen as well

has gone as fast as i could stand in my 358 win i settled on 48.5 grs rl-19 the saeco 250 sized at 358 in my hawkeye. will hold an inch at 100 till i get sore.

in my bolt and lever gun 30-30's i have pushed the same alloy waterdropped beyond jacketed velocity.
i backed down the load so it was comfortably shootable over a day's time.
basically every powder from 2400 through h-414 has done well.

in the 35 whelen i had to send some of those saeco's to blammer to see what they'd do
his rifle shot them well also, but i don't re-call the load details.
he wasn't going slow though.
if you got's the stuff for the 4-1 give it a try and see what you get.

lino is 22 bhn and soft is around 8 bhn
curious as to what the combo might turn out to be

3-1 is right round 12. hits 18 water dropped with normal temps, and tap water.
4-1 i'd guess at 9 maybe 10. water dropped should hit 16 or so.

I would have though the bhn would have been higher than that
but I suppose the lino is cut way down

Can`t remember what site it was on. Lyman #2 alloy was being made with 50/50 Lino/Pure Pb. Anbody try this combo or for that matter ever heard of it?Robert

I use one part lino to 4 parts lead for 40 S&W loaded to major. Lyman to size and lube with hard lube. Pretty much no leading to speak of... I find intact bullets in the dirt berm and flat coins near the steel.

My 3 to 1 WW Lino is bhn 15 air cooled and I get 22-24 oven heat treated, at least that is what my Cabintree hardness tester tells me.

Just to be sure I understand, you are speaking of an alloy that is made from 3 parts WW and 1 part Linotype?
I sometimes read things that are not meant, but I *do* know alloys.

The 50/50 lino/pure makes " hardball " 2-6-92 which is equal to #2 in hardness. The real #2 would perform better in a hunting rifle.

well fellers it shoots as advertised accurate and no leading in my test gun
model 94 win iron sights with a 170gr.boolit from Tom @ Accurate molds ,

the load was 33.5 gr w748 lit by a Fed gm215m and the alloy 4-1 ;)
that is a 20 round group with iron sights from 50 yds
oh and 1-44 mag for good measure

That's interesting. What velocity were you getting? I would have thought that Rel 19 is a bit slow for this application. I may have to give it a try. Is the Saeco mould you are using the #352? that has been the most accurate CB in my .358 Win Hawkeye when pressing on past 2000 FPS.
