$2 worth of solder

Went in an old style thrift store yesterday; one that doesn't think it's classy. It doesn't have the ffurniture arranged in room groups, it doesn't have the tableware set out on a linen cloth with candlesticks.

This store looks like a garage sale. Stuff piled up over here, gotta move things out of the way to get a closer look; in short, the sort of thrift store that is rapidly disappearing.

Right inside the door on the floor, in an old beat-up handmade wooden toolbox was a Hill Bros coffee can. The can had no barcode, and the seam was soldered together.

I nonchalantly picked it up and wandered around looking for pewter and whatnot. I found nothing, so went to the checkout.

The nice lady says ' Whatcha got there?' I showed her the can, she looked in.

"that stick is broken' she says, looking at the bar solder.
I shrugged.
'How 'bout 2 bucks? Them tools is worth 2 bucks.'

I agreed.

12 ounces of 50/50, and 12.5 ounces of some non-descript solder. I figure it's probably 40%Sn.

I got about 10-11 ounces of Sn for $2. Along with a cool old soldering iron, and a rusty pair of pliers. I'll take that deal.

Not bad. Will take lead and tin any way I can even if it’s just one wheel weight

Enough for thirty odd pounds of alloy at 2%. That's a nice pile of boolits.

Those pliers look like they might be from an 8N Ford tool kit.

I've got some Metal Magic you could use on the pliers, don't like it as much as EvapoRust. And I'll happily give you back your $2 for the soldering iron. ;)

No telling where they came from. Odd looking pair, but I can't find a makers mark.

Take any lead you find its starting to disappear thanks to the govt since they know whats best for you even if you don't

I'd keep the soldering iron out where people can see it.

I have odds and ends like that handy and in view just to see who comes along and asks, "What is THAT"?

Is that a soldering iron? or might it be a soldering copper? Those are worth a lot more than an iron.
