A 1971 and a 1978.
Don't know when mine was made but the front sight is mounted on a dovetail on the barrel if that is any indication. Frank
I have two 444 leverguns, a Marlin 336 and a Glenfield 30. Both started life as 30-30s. I replaced the barrels with marlin 1894 44 mag barrels that I rechambered to 444. Other modifications were made. I like them because of the shorter, lighter contour barrels.

Mine is a single shot handi rifle and one of the most accurate rifles I own. I load mine down as I am just punching paper. 6 to 13 grains of Red Dot works great.

The first .444 I bought was in 1967, the one with the straight-gripped monte carlo buttstock; which I later cut it's 24" bbl down to 16".
The 2nd was when the Model 444S (sporter) was introduced.
The 3rd was a Winchester 94 carbine
The 4th was a ported Winchester 94 Timber Carbine.
The 5th would have been the Marlin 444P Outfitter - but could never find one.
Now, I've given up the boomers - preferring cat-sneeze guns...…… ;)

I have no idea re "new or older model"? Mine is a Marlin Model 444, .444 Marlin, w/ recoil pad Made in 2005, with s/n 95,003,xxx. I answered an ad in a Free Trader newspaper, and fellow was not at all abashed in saying that he, a bottle of ginger brandy, and the brand new to him Marlin ascended a tree stand. He admittedly sipped to the point where he and firearm both fell 10-12 feet to the ground, and while the heavy snow cover prevented damage to him, the fall bent the lever. I do not believe he had fired five shots in it, as that's how many rounds of ammo were missing in box of ammunition he had purchased with the firearm which were not in the box which he also gave me after I bought the rifle from him. I ordered a new lever and (don't remember which (?)) a couple of minor parts from Brownell's, had them installed, and have loved this .444 ever since. The action is, indeed, butter smooth.

I've got one of the 444p outfitter that I picked up in college because I couldn't stand to keep walking by it in a local pawn shop. It was basically new with dies, 100 rds of new R-P brass and two boxes of factory R-P ammo minus 3 rounds. All I saw was a big bore straight grip lever gun for the same price as the 336 next to it, shop wanted it gone because it wasn't a 45-70 or a 30-30. I'm just as tickled with it now as when I bought it. Only downside is that mine definitely prefers gas check bullets because of the porting. It shoots the old tompson HP really well and has thumped several tight cover creek bottom deer.
I've been looking for one for weeks and finally I found a new one online - it should be here in a few days. I've already got two molds for my 44 rifles so I can start with these boolits = Accurate 43-275M and one LBTLFN 280 gr. Both plain base. I use Pat Marlins check maker to put checks on my plain base boolits with excellent results. I have a few scopes I can top it with so I will work on it and some of the loads then post the results somewhere in the forum. Looking forward to the Ballard cut rifling to see what it will do with my silver boolits. If Marlin ever comes out with a smaller version again I will grab it too. This is a wonderful caliber - much overlooked. I dropped my 06 and 308 for deer hunting 2 years ago for a 44 mag rifle. I have the Henry all steel and the Ruger 77/44. Both of them digest the two boolits above very well with 22.0 gr of H110. BUT... these are 100 yd guns and I have taken 2 deer out to 150 with a decent hold-over with those cast boolits. After 125 yds the 44 starts to drop like a rock. I could have taken a big buck the other day at 220 yds IF I had the 444. Im really looking forward to tweaking this lever gun for deer, black bear and maybe a trip out to Alaska for something much tougher.
I have the original, 336-444, with the Monte Carlo, half magazine.
I bought a new 444P IN 1999 after my forth 12 hour midnight shift, receipt says 383.50 before tax. Excellent purchase even if I don't recall.
I just picked up a used JM Marlin pre-safety .444 with an 18.5" Micro groove barrel and a straight grip Monte Carlo stock. I've always wanted one, and the price was waaay too good to pass up.
Not sure which model it is. Would love to know. The SN is 69113XXX without any letters.
Can't wait to whip up some plinking and hunting loads for it!
I've got a 444p 1999 mfg. just love it love the 265 gr slugs have lots of new cast load that I want to try when it warms up a bit.
