Is there any reason why the cutter should have a curved profile?
If it was flat across the top it would have to remove less material and would produce a semi-polygonal barrel.

If it was flat across the top it would have to remove less material and would produce a semi-polygonal barrel.
Use a wide enough cutter in a 6 groove and you end up with a Whitworth barrel.
