Newbie to powder coating

Greetings gentlemen.
I’m new to this site and was referred to it by friends from the Shiloh Rifle forum.

I’ve been casting a long time for BPCR’s (Sharps and Rolling block).

I got into suppressors last year and I’m an addict now.

I came to this site because I have questions on powder coating.

My current project is to build a 45/70 MGM barreled encore that I can shoot suppressed subsonic cast bullets in the 500-550 grain weight range.

I already have some moulds that I use for my Sharps that drop 525 grain bullets in 30/1 lead/tin alloy.

Could I powder coat the same bullets in 30/1 and drive them with a powder like trail boss without leading my barrel?

Would I have to step up to a harder alloy to make this work? I’m think the 30/1 alloy bullets would get destroyed if I shook them in a tub with powder. They’re very soft.

Absolutely will work. I actually powdercoat my muzzleloader bullets

I cant help a ton on 45/70 subsonic, however I run both 50 beowulf 594 gr and 510 Whisper 1000 grain cast bullets subsonic and suppressed. For both, I ended up running COWWs and powdercoating them when running suppressed. My pressures are in the 25ksi range however. I tried running pure lead with my 1000gr boolits, and got lots of leading with powdercoat, even when sized 0.002" over groove diameter.

Remember, powder coating will add 1 thousandth (common) up to 4 thousandths (rare)in diameter and eliminates the need for lube.

PC is just a clean no-smoke/leading replacement for grease on PROPER FIT lead boolits. PC just replaces the grease. NOT a miricale cure for ill-fitting boolits. Make sure you check the fit of your barrel. Slug it! PC will not solve bad fit!!!!!!!!

I have a question on the BBDT method of powder coating. Why do so many people put the boolits, powder, & BBs in little plastic food bins and then place them in the tumbler?

Can't you just run the boolits, powder, and BBs loose in the Tumbler?

BJJ............cuz then you have a JOB cleaning the tumbler!

So the powder paint sticks to the tumbler real bad? Does it then interfere with polishing brass?

What if you have two tumbler bowls? I got a Lyman pumpkin bowl and it came with a smaller bowl for polishing smaller quantities of brass.

I wouldn't even consider using the same tumbler.

We got one of the cheap Frankford Arsenal tumblers last time it went on sale. It does noting but PC and gets nothing else put in it. 500 pistol bullets at a time. No baggies, no ASBB. It coats them awesome.

We have a powered air filter next to it in our shop to collect dust from the process. It's not really just from the tumbler running but the dumping and shaking in the trays. Otherwise, I'd recommend wearing a dust mask while working and vacuuming up when done.

I just watched a youtube video where a fellow switched colors and did no more than wipe the Lyman tumbler bowl out with a cloth rag and it came clean.

If you are going to PC and have to buy Equipment, my very limited advice would be get a harbore freight coupon and get the PC machine. Make a tray that can support the boolit and electrostaticaly powdercoat. I couldent get the results i wanted and just made a big mess in the process.not sure why. But others get fantastic looking results with shake and bake.
