Got my Elk tag in a draw - Working up a CB load for my 300 Win Mag

Got my Elk tag, now for developing a load for my 300 Win Mag. I am casting with an RCBS 308-200-SIL mold. Cast a few hundred today and will be developing some loads for this hunt. Since terrain for this hunt will limit the distance to within 200 yards or there about, I will not need jacketed like I do east of the mountains where it is open high desert country. Looking forward to testing this rifle with cast on a large animal. Thought I would start with SR 4759 and CCI Mag primer and start working up an accurate load. Can't find any load data for a 200 gr CB, the closest is a 190gr, so I will start with a 5% reduced 190 gr published load and work up from there. Sure would like to bring down a good Bull with a CB.

Handloader magazine had a recent article on cast bullets in the 300 Win Mag cartridge. I have it in a binder at the house but it may be on the web also.

You may need to use a slower powder to get velocity out to 200.

I have a 175gr flat nose that I cast for possible use in the .308/30-06 an 300 win mag.

4895 is a decent powder for reduced loads. their website talks about reduced loads for 4895.
with the fast twist of 300mag, what velocity and accuracy are you holding out for?

Lyman's cast bullet book lists a number of powders for a 190gr that all get into the 2300 - 2400fps range, with 5744 being listed as the most accurate.

That powder seems to show good results in quite a few cartridges/cast bullet loads and the starting loads for the 190gr will provide a place for the beginning of testing with the slightly heavier 200gr.

H 4895 is one of the powders listed.

I do have an adequate supply of 4895(not H 4895) and it one of the powders I had on my list to try. Velocity over 2000, then wherever the accuracy sweet spot develops after that.

I have tried cast in fast twist barrels, and never got any decent accuracy beyond 2000 or 2200fps.
my guess would be to try a really heavy boolit, and let her fly about 2000fps.

That's my target 200 grains at 2000fps.

Retread, I'm waiting to see your 100 yard and 200 yard groups as well. My 375 RUM wouldn't hit the broadside of a barn while I was locked in it using 235gr j words and trail boss. Finally started grouping, and still unimpressive, with minimum loading of normal charges which were around 2650fps. Once I was close to the 3000fps mark it shot nice tight groups. I'm chalking it up to too fast of a twist and too slow of velocity.

I look forward to seeing the results of your hunt! No doubt your load will kill, I've harvested a small pile of deer with a slightly lighter 30-06 load, but there is not much of a wound channel past 100 yards or so. Do you have an alloy in mind? What is your aiming point going to be? Personally, I wouldn't hesitate sending a couple immediate follow up shots to go ahead and anchor the critter as quickly as possible, meat loss would be neglible. Be sure to get some good pics once the hide comes off!

We shoot only cast in our 375 H&H. Heavy cast GC at that 2000 fps level is not hard to get to with 4350 and 4831. Our 1885 (jap) with a 28" barrel uses 2 grains lea of powder than the 24" CZ bolt rifle.
If you want to paper patch some PB's you can cast the slugs with 50/50 and have all the expansion that poor bean eater will ever handle. Those will expand wherever they land and tear a good drain hole a long ways along the path.
