Don't mean to go off topic, but most 410 skeet shooters I know claim it is the best currently produced powder for 410. Has the slower burn rate of H110, without the migration issues. If you can find it, count yourself as lucky.
Got my hands on some Alliant Power Pro 300 MP. Here are two groups compared. Both are from my 20" barreled Remington 700 .308 Win. 1-10 twist with Leupold VX1 2-7x33. Groups are 10 shots each.
First: IMR SR4759

Next: 300MP

These two loads are identical in every way except for the powder. I have read elsewhere on the forum (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...=1#post2579046) that it may be necessary to increase the charge of 300MP slightly over the corresponding charge of SR4759. I have not chrongraphed these loads. I suspect that increasing the charge of 300MP slightly to 22.0 grs. may tighten up the group and bring the velocity on par with the SR4759 load.
Thanks for posting the pics, with load info ! I have a .30-06 that I'm fixing to start messing with, and this helps alot.
I would bet that the 300MP load is already going faster than the SR4759 load. If you get the chance to clock those loads, I would certainly like to see that info.
I have only found one burn rate chart that had 300MP on it. It was the next slower than SR4759. Of course we don't know how much slower, if any, but that would indicate why the other poster thought it needed an increase in the charge. However, I will chrony these loads later this week and then we shall know for sure what they are doing.
I have the rounds to test loaded, I was just unable to get to the range this weekend. It will have to wait until Saturday. I am out of town until then...
How does the 300MP meter , better or worse than the 4759 ?
Jack
I wouldn't know that as I don't meter anything. However, in as much as 300 MP looks like Bullseye, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that it meters very well for those that do.
300MP is a very fine ball powder. I have used it in place of 4759 in a 3855 with decent results but haven't pursued it's use very far.
1/2 of the equation that made SR4759 so desirable was it's bulk. It filled larger cases to a greater degree than most other similar burning powders giving much less "powder position sensitivity". Doesn't sound like the 300MP does that?
Larry Gibson
As long as it's accurate the bulk doesn't matter so much to me .
Jack
Ok, I don't have all the data but I have some of it. I don't know what the chrony was doing but my two strings were ruined by some wildly inaccurate numbers from another rifle I shot today after these two strings with the SR4759/300MP. Not sure why they got into the strings.
What I have is the two average velocities, going by memory. For 21.5 gr. SR4759 from the 20" barrel of my .308 Win. : 1775 fps I don't recall the SD on this but the ES was like 9.
For 21.5 gr. 300MP : 1753 fps I do not recall the ES or SD for this but they were little more than the SR4759; the ES could have been 19 but I'm not certain.
The rediculous velocities were 6645, 4558 and 1971 which were three shots from a paper patch .338 bullet. The only one I believe is the 1971 which was the only one that functioned correctly by shedding the patch as confetti in front of the bench. The load was 37.0 gr. IMR4895 and it went right to point of aim.
If those 2 velocities are accurate and the powder is not position sensitive it looks like a winner if the pictures posted are an example of what it can do in your gun. The difference in velocities are close enough to be loading error or std variation.
Did you use a filler with the MP300?ripshod
No filler was used.
I'm pretty sure gravel meters better than SR4759. This is why I have an RCBS Charge Master 1500:p
Here are a couple of new groups. The first is .308 Win with the Lyman 311672 sized .311" and 23.0 gr. 300MP. This group is reasonably accurate, however, the cases were badly smoked with this light 163 gr (lubed and checked) bullet. Also the ES and SD were quite high. The 21.5 gr load with the 314299 did not do this, I believe because of the heavier bullet. Some may want to add a 1 gr. pinch of dacron here with the lighter bullet.

The second group is from the .30-06 loaded with the NOE 311332 194 gr. (lubed and checked), 25.0 gr 300MP and crimped over the scraping groove. The heavier bullet plus crimp allowed more pressure to develop.

Tried to get some more data today. I went back to the 314299 sized 0.311" in the .308 Win loaded over 22.5 gr of 300MP. I had good pressure an no dirty smoked cases as with the 311672 bullet. I fired 17 of them into one ragged 3/4" hole at 50 yds. Unfortunately with all the sunlight and Rambo on either side of me, the data was corrupted. These loads clocked about 1880 fps or so, but Rambo's muzzle blast was making about 1400 and he got in 4-5 for every one of mine. If I get the chance, I will re-shoot these later this week and post the data. For reference, see the pic above of the same bullet over 21.5 gr of SR4759. They were about the same.
Here is the data:

any further testing on this? im an alliant junkie and use 300MP in handguns, but hadnt thought of it as a rifle powder. Usually IME ball powder doesnt like reduced rifle loads. im going ot try some of the 23 gr loads in 308 with a lee 170 gr and see how it goes out of my ishapore this week.
I've been using it in my two 32-40's with great success. I'll have to try and work up a load for the 38-55 also, but first I'll have to order up an 8 pound jug of it.
I amm also interested in how well 300mp does in the 44 magnum 260gr-300gr range
I thought MP 300 was Alliant's response to H-110 and 296. Interesting to see it can be used in reduced loads as H-110 and 296 cannot.
fired a few loaded at 23 grs today. two were totally normal, one had some primer flatteneing but no other pressure signs. this weekend might do a 25 round test if time allows
did soem shooting today. accuracy is on par with regualr ammo out of my 2A1 ishapore at 50 meters. 100 it opens up a bit but still good plinking ammo for 14 cents a shot
anyone else use it in the 44 mag?
Accurate 5744 if you can find it not as bulky as SR4759 but a great powder that fits the bill for almost all cast loads. Not position sensitive and fast burn rate like SR4759. can be used from 222 through 45/70 with good to great results. Anybody in OK or KS Powder Valley in Winfield KS has it for 28.95 per pound in stock
accurate powders here are 34-39$ a pound on average
