A reason for keeping the cutoff in place on the 1898 Krag is that it often won't feed from the magazine without it. I believe Buckshot had to notch the cutoff shaft and wing to allow it to be used. In my Krag the cutoff was replaced with a pin. It sure would not feed without it.

One thing about A5744 is that it is prone to bridging in drum-type powder measures; one should weigh each and every charge or use a dipper.
