I have a pile of stuff cast that I may or may not get loaded this year. They are mostly on shelves in the garage, which is the only place I have for my bench. It gets pretty cold in there in the winter, and in the late afternoons of the summer when the sun beats on the door it probably exceeds 100F a number of times every summer. Do I need to worry about the BLL on finished boolits melting or deteriorating under these conditions?
I've used it here in the South year round and have never had a problem with melting. It gets a lot hotter here than where you live.
My brother lives close to you and has no such problems.
He's just up the mountains a bit from Denver.
I shoot at a range with no shade at the bench in the summer for hours and no problems there either.
Give 'em a test.
Toaster oven set to 180ºF, boolits on alum foil...look for melting lube
If you are doing it right, 2 or more thin barely visible coats it will dry fully, harden to a hard shell finish that won't move with heat. It just bakes harder.
If it is pure alox running in gobs, it might. But I don't think it would cause any problems other than mess in your ammo storage.
Not as warm up here in the Dakota's but my uncooled reloading room does reach the 80's in a hot streak.
And BLL coated bullets left in the car for a day or 3 showed no signs of migration. They just get less sticky.
Ah, the in the car test. I have noticed that after a couple months the lube becomes not the least bit tacky. I still suspect I put on more than is necessary but I get the hard coated.
i really like the stuff. Somewhat warm loads of a 250 pb Keith boolit over 7 gr. Unique shoots squeaky clean in my .44 spc. BH.
