Anyone have a good 357 Mag "hunting load" using one of the heavier boolits (358429 or LAR45 or Ranch Dog 180s).
Max AOL that I can get to feed reliably with the heavy boolits is 1.608 (?), I think that is correct, going from memory here.
The heaviest I have been able to shoot and get decent results on target are 358156s.
Who would ever think build a plant with one rifling machine at 1:30?
at least they didn't rifle their 44 mag's to only shoot 200gr bullets.
I shoot 180's in my older carbine on top of AA#9 with no drama.

Although the OP didn't directly mention it, it looks like he's shooting a .357, and not a .44.

I use 358429 over unique for lite loads and 2400 for heavy loads in .38 spl. cases. (.38-44 loads).crimp them in the crimp groove. they shoot and feed good have dropped every thing I have shot with them. will use them for deer this year.
I use the RCBS rnfp 180 grain over H110 with no problems. Accuracy is around 3" at 100 yards with iron sights or was when I could see.

some of the Taurus made Rossi 357 rifles are meant for the lighter 125-140gr bullets I don't know what possessed them to do that.

I shoot NOE's 360-180WFN COAL @ 1.59, 15.3gr H110 Winchester sp primers 24" barrel, 1710fps. This bullet when sized, checked, and lubed weighs 187gr with my alloy.
180 gr gc boolits over 11.5. Gr 2400 =1250fps and accurate in my trapper .
Paco describes loads in his article "357 Magnum and the Literature" that in my '92 I don't think I can reach, probably due to chamber/bore dimensions, but I did develop some stout working loads by the time I achieved pressure limits I don't care to exceed, and which I hunt with. Work up with caution:
1. A Lee 358-158-RF cast of WW's (or a plated .357 RNFP) over 15.7gr of 2400, standard small pistol primer. Load density is 100%, but not compressed.
2. A group buy 180gr RNFP cast of WW's over 16.5gr of LilGun, standard small pistol primer. Load density is at or near 100%, but not compressed.

I have dropped 2 deer and one coyote with this load.....so far
Lee C358-200-RF, Loaded long in a 38 sp case, 6.1 grains herco. I can't remember the COL and my load notes are down in the barn. It is loaded long enough that it will not chamber in a 38. It shoots great in my Rossi 92.
I for one happen to like that they went with 1:30” ROT. Makes for an excellent twist with my favorite, the Lyman 358156 (and similar), that doesn’t lead up the bore. I use 15.0grs of 2400 for hunting loads.
Lar45 GB boolit. C358-180-RF. 16 grains lilgun. ~1800 fps. Still doing ~1050 at 300 yards, actually chronographed. As to AOL, I can't remember, but I did have to slightly round, with a dremel, the lead outward face of the chamber to get very reliable chambering. This load in my rifle sometimes starts to go unstable at around 275 yards. I think the 1-30 does fine.
You can gain a little stability using an alloy 1-2 BHN points lower than your current alloy. As long as accuracy holds.Quote:

I decided to check out this topic because I saw someone on a FB group with an european made mold that was a 170gr RNHP. I can't remember the name, but a good looking bullet that I thought might work well in my Rossi 92 .357.
I suppose an 180 would work just as well too.

..............Tough to get even a blunt 200gr RN to seat short enough to feed in the Rossi M92 357 with any kind of load at all. I HAVE shot nice groups with stout velocities for the 200 gr slugs, but the OAL's were like 1.685". I do have load data shot with the Saeco #356 RFGC 200gr, Lee GB C-360-200-R, and the Lyman 358430, single loading only. The data below was fired 11-10-13, and shows an ambiant temp of 80º.
Below is data fired in my M92 Rossi short rifle (20" bbl) using R-P 38 Special cases with the Lee group buy C-360-200-R @ 12 bhn, sized .3585 and 202grs with a Hornady GC, CCI 500 primer, Carnauba Red lube. Case was roll crimped into the crimp groove. On my data sheet for signs of pressure (primer, extraction, or casehead expansion there were no notations.
4.5gr Red Dot, 1026.8 fps
5.0gr Unique, 943 fps
4.3gr Grn Dot, 935 fps
8.0gr 2400, 1016 fps
9.0gr IMR 4227, 733 fps.
Considering load data for a 200 gr cast lead slug in the 38 S&W as a starting point (plus a tiny amount more to keep from sticking a slug in the barrel) and with judicious care, a safe usable load could easily be worked up using 38 Special brass in the M92 Rossi.
