Generally fast growing wood makes the best charcoal and Sycamore is definitely a fast growing wood. As far as a hardwood it is not and is very light when dried. I'd give it a try if you can't find anything else and see what happens. I think I would try finger size saplings instead of fallen branches. Sycamore rots rather fast and by the time the branches drop they may already be rotten.
