The Holland Boone WAS alum.:cry:I thought I had a good haul.
Hopefully the Boone didn't cost you too much. Now you won't get fooled again. Someone should make that a song.
I think I got "buck fever" and forgot this warning at a yard sale today. So, for $5, bought 3 tall, tall candle sticks that were made in India and just marked Pewter on a paper price stamp. They don't dent when bashed together and make a nice ringing sound. I'm still new to this and just get too excited!
Did find a couple unmarked, glass bottom tankards that bent easily and "cryed". Weight was 9.8 oz each for a nickle a piece, ten cents total.
Less than 10 cents a pound is pretty sweet. Congrats!
Thanks, My wife was with me and actually had the first nickel out before I could dig in my pocket for one, so just 5 cents cost to me. I didn't ask about any more pewter till that transaction was made and the woman dug out another one for me. I paid the nickel for just the second one.
Deducting the glass and caulking weight, they're prolly just about 14 oz of pewter together. I'd take that deal every day of the week!
I guess I forgot to post about last weeks yard sale pewter haul. A much better weekend for yard sales! I must have gone to 20 of them around the area. I ended up with at least 6 lbs 5 oz of hallmarked pewter. At one yard sale alone, mosly. When I asked the price of the pewter items, the woman said $10 for the whole table. Not all pieces were pewter, some were silver or plated silver. A hall marked 5 1/2" tall, candle stick holder weighed 13.3 oz, an 8 1/4" tall, covered syrup pitcher weighed 22.6 oz and a 16 1/2" platter weighed 54 oz. At one other sale, got a Jagermeifter deer head shot glass for 25 cents that I melted the head off the SS cup and that head weighed 1.6 oz.
I need to research the plated silver items. They sure melt just like pewter! Some tea kettles have copper soldered to the bottoms and a covered stein sure looks like pewter but, no hallmark, the bottom had been replaced by soldering a piece of copper to it also.

I am finding Van Bergh S P Co. Quadruple Plate as being a "silver" plated something. It sure seems like lead or pewter is the "plated" material.
The tankard and candlestick look like pewter. The tea set could be anything. The pitcher I'd have to have a closer look at.
I have some pitchers like that one also so, I'd be real interested to find out, too. I can say that when I exposed places to a propane torch, it melted immediately, just as I'd expect from pewter of that thickness. The plating was thin and the outside plating turned to dust, like it needed the core material for strength.
I haven't tried to totally melt them down yet. If they melt at about 450*F, it must be pewter, right? How else would you tell, acid test?
Quadruple plate base metal could be pewter, brittania or white metal (white metal is a catch all phrase for whatever's in the pot). If you can hold your known pewter at 450-470degF then it would be a pretty good indicator of the other pieces alloy. Good Luck.
I'm looking to buy some pewter items, and the seller sent me a picture of the things they have. One of them is clearly marked Wilton, so after reading through this thread I told them I wasn't interested in that particular piece, the other items though--I am not 100% sure. There is a small dish that is marked "PEWTER" on the bottom, and some rings that I believe are all, but hoping the pewter experts here might help me out--and give me an estimate of how much they are worth to go into ingot form.

I believe this "Daily Bread Platter" is the Wilton item

For a purchasing estimate, I would figure the rings at 2 ounces each and the candlestick at 4 ounces. The plate is Wilton and of no use in casting, except maybe to hold a damp sponge for mold cooling. :)
Less than a pound in ingots, shipping will likely kill the deal. Sorry.
Well the person also has some lead too, old window weights. So if they have enough to make it worth while I'll meet to purchase. Appreciate the info!
What's the consensus on figurines, are they real pewter?

Some are, some aren't. You are at the mercy of markings and your senses.
Avon, Spoontiques and other "brand name" items probably are.
How much would a Royal Holland set like this be worth?
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...pskjidknjb.jpg
I would estimate it at about 4.5 pounds at the high end. Melted many just like it. The plastic tray is a disappointment. Not much weight in the ring.
That is close to what I surmised. Figured the price of the set was based on per pound weight at $35, which is more than I figured it would be worth making a venture on.
Picked up some pewter at the storefront of our local food pantry. They accept donations and sell them to buy food for the needy.
Two candlesticks (weighted), salt & pepper shaker (weighted), and a small plate.

The candle sticks weighed 9.5 and 10 oz before removing the weights and 2.5 and 3.5 oz after.
The salt & pepper shaker weighed 5.5 and 6.5 oz before and 1.5 oz each after.
The small plate weighed in at 9oz even.
For a grand total of 18 oz for $3.00.
Not the greatest deal, but the money goes to a good cause. We also got a pair of dress pants for me and some clothes for my wife at the same time for only $7 dollars more.
Here's the marking on the bottom of one of the candlesticks (the other was missing) and the salt shaker:
