I would have that conversation with him. Tell him that if he passes it's most likely that his wife or kids will just auction or pawn it all off. Tell him you'll buy it. He'll know it will be cared for and cherished and he can shoot them any time he likes. The truth and the end results may take the sting out of it for him.

The trick seems to be selling it or giving it away to the right people before you cant.
