To get a different viewpoint, or the truth, try listening to the BBC. Especially for world news, it used to be pretty accurate without the varnish that gets applied to 'news' here.
The fumes from that mess alone are good reason to not be downwind within miles of it.
As for the explosion Col. Hatcher had many pics in his book on a US Army depot explosion in NJ, 1920's. Destroyed vehicles and buildings 1/2 mile away. Severely damaged buildings 3/4 mile away. Conventional explosives, lots of it.
