I have been on other forums looking for casting information. From the looks of it I was waisting my time till I found this one! Just what I was looking for!

New guy checking in. Got into reloading in 2010, and black powder in 2011. Now thinking about getting into casting when time permits. Here first for an education, so will likely be reading more than posting. But I'm a regular over on THR. Regards to all!

I just bought my melting pot, ladle and mold to cast round balls for my flintlock. Where can I find a primer on getting started? When and how do you use flux? Also, I read one recommendation to blacken the inside of my mold with a candle flame. What's that all about? I was also told to get some high temperature moly grease. Again, what's that for?
Thanks!

A lot of folks blacken their moulds so they will release the boolit. I find this an unnecessary thing 'cause I ended up stopping up the vent lines in the mould. Fluxing the melt returns the tin into the lead as temp. tends to make the tin come out of the lead and is usually skimmed off. By fluxing it returns it into the melt. High temp. moly grease is used in a formula for boolit lube. There are a lot of mixtures for boolit lube. Recluse's 45/45/10 is the lube I use. It's made from 45 parts JPW (Johnson's Paste Wax), 45 parts Lee Liquid Alox (mule snot) and 10 parts MS (mineral spirits) and works well for boolit lube. However, I believe you are considering casting for your flintlock. You will need to use nearly 100% pure lead for your flintlock balls and a very soft lube for your patches. I personally use Bore Butter in my flintlock to lube the patch when loading a round ball. I only shoot RB's in my flintlock .50 Pedersoli eventhough the manufacturer says that it will handle conical boolits very well. I only have one .50 minie ball and I've never shot it and will probably return it into my pot for remelting. You might want to check out the muzzleloaders section of this forum. There's a wealth of information contained on this site and a lot of good reading material pertaining to your specific needs. And welcome to the CastBoolit forum. BC

Noob says Hello
Excuse me I recently joined this forum did not introduce myself. I have already made a few posts, have joined in on some group buys and have spent lots of time reading threads. Everyone has been very polite and helpful. My private messages have all been answered swiftly with the information being given in a non condensending manner.
I have been gathering equipment and materials to start casting, but have yet to pour my first bullet. I have read about half of "From ingot to target", and have ordered Lymans 4th edition cast bullet handbook.
I have been Reloading for around 35 years, and am a avid (I prefer "Hardcore") hunter. I am a big fan of lever guns, revolvers and military style rifles. I shoot some midrange matches (600 yds.) with my Garand and M1A, but when I hunt it's mostly with a bow or a lever action rifle. I live in northcentral Arkansas where I am not considered outside the norm for having enough guns and ammo to take over a third world country.

Hi everyone. I've been lurking around here a lot lately and am truly impressed by the amount of great information you all are sharing. I've been reloading for about 25 years, but have never cast a boolit in my life -I've thought I'd like to for a long time though. I like to shoot a fair amount and have some old and odd-ball guns that would be fun to cast for. From what I've seen, if the good folks here can't talk me through this, then there's no hope for me!

Casting Bullets:
Everyone on this board is welcome and invited to teach me how to cast bullets and size them correctly. I'm sure looking forward to all you have to offer. I've ordered a Saeco 30.06 and .303 mould and handles. I've ordered a .45acp 200gr SWC Keith style and .45acp 230gr RN Mould (all moulds and handles are RCBS actually all the casting equipment is RCBS). Plus I have a RCBS Pro Electric Pot and bought some lead alloy from Roto Metals to get me started. I have been reloading and shooting competitively for 45 years. I have never cast bullets though and I have the bug. I'm going to shoot them in my AR-15's and my (2) Garands plus my Smith-Corona 03A3. along with my seven different British Enfields. I won't be leaving out the handguns, I'll be loading .32acp .38 special .45acp and 9mm. All the casting equipment has been ordered the first part of the week and some of it has started to arrive. The equipment is ordered from Midway, Grafs and Son, MidSouthShootersSupply. So it won't be long until everything is here. I just finished reading Lymans Cast Bullet Hand Book 4th edition which is mainly written by Mike Venturino. He is the only man who has been loading longer than me. Except he has been loading cast bullets the last 45 years. Like I said before all the equipment moulds furnace and tools are RCBS so if there is any problems they will be replaced right away. I don't plan on any hunting but I plan on shooting all my Military WWII Rifles with cast bullets and posting a report on how everything turned out. Also what ranges I'm going to do the shooting so if any of you want to join me and shoot my guns and offer tips, please you are very welcome. I think loading the ammunition will be the fastest part once the bullets are all cast and its certainly going to be a learning experience for me. Each time I have some bullets loaded for a particular gun I will post it and let everyone know when and where we will shoot them. If you have never loaded cast and would like to learn this would be a great opportunity to learn with us. I will start posting Monday what is going to be our first project plus when I'm going to start casting bullets I will post my infor to contact me direct. Look forward to seeing you, TedZ

Hello, I just joined today. I joined because I wanted to talk about melting lead and things to do with lead. I am one of the few people that enjoy melting lead. I think I will feel welcome here after I settle in and post a few times to get to know you.
