Pam might burn crisp and cement the boolits to the tin foil.
Got the HF unit to try. I want to find some 1/4" wire grate but I will set the CBs nose first on foil over a board, with the grate ungrounded. After coating I will raise the grate and put it with CBs in the oven, sans foil and board. I can recover the unused powder and don't care if the grate is PC as it isn't the ground. The alox is a good idea. I tried the hot dip method and didn't get even coating, just globs. I thought about making a sealed box with a fan blade in it (motor outside) to insert hot CBs, turn on fan to blow the powder around. All the references say the thickness of the coating can't be controlled very well, al least in a home brew. Got to dig up a replacement oven and find some chicken wiree or make my own grate.
Leadman - what alloy did you use in the 30-06?
Have you guys found that the PC significantly increases the size? I do not want to have to size twice (once before PC and once after) and the mold I have drops about where I need it or a little bit larger than I need finished. The mold I am looking at for the 300 Blackout is listed at .311 so I do not know how the bullet will work if the PC adds any real size. Trying to figure all this out, hopefully going to set the gun and oven up tomorrow but this just went through my brain as I was watching the game.
Thanks
So just powder coat and then size. The coating is actually quite "slick" when running through a sizer die. It bonds to the lead when it cures to spring back isn't an issue.
popper, my alloy is a mix of isotope, coww, lino, misc alloys. When water quenched it is 17 BHN. I tested some reject powder coated boolits that were in the oven too long and the bhn had dropped to 8. This was after about 25 minutes in the oven at 400 degrees. I'll test another boolit from a batch heated for 15 minutes when I get time.
I may also add some more lino to my alloy so I get around 15bhn and see if these shoot better.
I did some 223 boolits, and with the alox dip. This time it did not work as well as the 30 cal as the foil stuck. I may have used too little alox, or the smaller boolit did not like it. My 223 boolits have a flat nose, though the diameter is much smaller than the base. I never could carry them from the coating spot to the oven without almost all stood on the nose falling and many on the base falling. With the alox I got all into the oven without one falling over. I did many on their nose to coat the bases, and also some on their base like normal. now I just got to get to loading them to see how well they perform.
Someone asked some questions about the sears pc gun. I found that too much powder in the cup makes it difficult to get it to spray. I use it less than half filled, closer to a quarter filled. YMMV.
hi all, how about a range report?
i posted a pic of some of the black PC boolits that i did up the other day, well i ended up PCing about 100 95gn makarov boolits, i loaded them up and even loaded up some regular lead with lube bullits to take out and shoot. I got to go out today and shoot. So how was it?
i have to say that i was very impressed with the black PCed bullets. I started with the lead bullets, here they are
Attachment 60357
those shot well through my p64, but the bullseye powder is kinda dirty, and the bullets smoked pretty good, but after 50 rounds, there was absolutly no leading.
My p64 takes about 5 seconds to take down so i did so after each magazine shot. each time there was powder residue, but no leading, when i was done with the lead rounds I cleaned the barrel and moved on to the 100 black PCed bullets. Here they are just before the first magazine load.
Attachment 60358
now the very first thing i noticed at firts firing is they have a weird smell, not sure what it is, powder coat maybe, but the bullets performed very well, very minimal to no smoke, compaired to the lead lubed rounds, again after each magazine i took it down and inspected the barrel, and saw nothing but powder residue, after firing fast then reloading, then one by one shoots, then fast again, i went through my 100 PCed rounds in no time, i did manage to take a pic of the barrel after firing the last shot, but the pic is not very good so take it for what it is.
Attachment 60360
again all i saw was residue, and no leading. after getting home and doing a good cleaning, the barrel is once again spotless, and i did not clean out any lead.
i think i will be powder coating some 9mms next and maybe in yellow or red just for giggles. just my .02, tahke it or leave it.
I want to try pc on maxi balls for my Black powder rifle. Its an old .54 cal cap lock. Has anyone tried it yet? Do you think the pc could take the place of bore butter?
Going to try some .356 9mm bullets and PC and size to .357 and give them a shot hopefully friday, if that works well then it is time for the 300 black only problem will be any increase in size over what the bullet drops at will likely have a problem with being too large for the gun.
then just run it through a sizer. smashing them down a 1000th or 2 will not be a problem.
Anybody try using rice to reduce moisture in the powder? The HF unit has a water trap but it's been foggy here all week, expect rain today.Got to turn on the compressor to blow the water out of that 20 gal. tank.
OK, MEK will dissolve the PC but just makes it rubbery, not good. I'll need to put a better regulator on the HF gun, I bled the tank to 15 psi and still applied way too heavy. I also need to build a #12 copper wire cube, placed into a poly bag, place a steel plate(with Alum Foil) in the bottom to contain the powder. The cardboard box worked but I still got a lot of blow back. As I'm shooting SA I'll coat base down, place on a steel plate (Lowes - $0.88) on top of flat washers. I got the junk on the nose so they won't fit the seater plug and probably won't cycle on the feed ramp. They sized fine.
I went to the thrift store and got an aluminum cookie sheet for a buck. I can cut it down and make about 3 sheets to fit into the oven. drill holes for nose first paint job. Now I will have base and sides protected so SHOULD be good. Will have to wait till the weather warms A LOT.
That is the problem I had tonight, figuring out how to put them on something nose down, currently doing a TC 9mm and cannot think of anything short of drilling out a pan like you did. The prospect of drilling 500 holes does not sound pleasant, tried all of the metal grate material I have here and found nothing that will fit. Will have to check Lowes tomorrow since I have to pick up PVC anyways.

Saw this plastic crate the wife had dumped in the garage, worked real well. The trash bag has enough volume to prevent most blow back. I used GC for the left ones (40SW) and 9mm case for the right one. It has a little edge on the nose but looks good. Going to find some expanded metal grid, conductive epoxy and glue the 9mm or GC to the cross part, the spacing should be good with 1/2 x 3/4 grid. When the cases get grubby I'll use an inside case prep tool to clean them up. Add a pigtail wire to the grid so the alligator clip doesn't get so grubby.

Loaded 45 Colt and 9mm with PC soft lead boolits, both RN and Truncated. Had the same loaded loaded with COWW. Fired 20 Rounds for each type both in 45 Colt and 9mm. All rounds were PC. I could not find any difference in groupings. I was not able to reclaim the boolits after firing to see what the effects were after they came to stop. I would have liked to shot into some pulverized rubber, recovered them and saw how they did. That's my next test.
Sent my first powder coated bullets down range today. 30 Herrett 16.5gr, 17gr, 17.5gr 2400 behind 135gr cast. Big improvement in accuracy over lubed bullet, no leading and only a hint of PC in throat. Did nit run over Chrono but I Attachment 60696Attachment 60697would estimate velocity in the 1700 to 1800 fps range. This is out of a 14" t/c contender barrel.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH H!!!!!!!!!!! Now this makes my wallet screem. I wana try this.
cylinderman - Aw shucks, now I got to do those PB 30-30. Going to try the 40SW this morning.Chips, plating, what does it look like? Did you use chicken wire to get the whole CB coated?Quote:
