Loading 110 gr Jacketed in .30/30's

I have two 94 Winchesters, a Marlin 336 and a .30 Carbine that I am keeping for defensive guns in case Beto comes after AR's.

I was planning on getting a mold for the .30/30's but am also looking at a cheap commercial bullet. I remember before the madness hit, 110 gr plated Berry bullets were $100/1000. 110 gr bullets can be driven to 2500 fps in the .30/30 and I am wondering if anyone has any experience with them. It would be advantageous to have a cheap commercial bullet I can utilize in the four guns. If I could get 3 MOA from the .30/30's out to 200 yards that would be good enough.

The 110's will be used for coyotes, "fun shooting" and home defense if the SHTF.

Please share your experience and opinions.

You need to check the Berry's website to see if the 110 plated can safely be pushed that fast without stripping the plating off; may not be able to. They also have a plated .30 150 grainer that is designed for rifles, but I don't know how fast they can be safely pushed. GF

Here is a note from the FAC on the Berry's bullets site concerning their plated bullets. Notice, they make a specific mention of the 110 grain bullet.

How fast can I shoot these bullets?

We guarantee our Standard Bullets to handle velocities up to 1,250 fps, and up to 1,500 fps for the bullets designated as TP (thick plated).

Our 30-30 and 45-70 bullets can handle velocities up to 1,700 fps.

110 is hell of a light bullet for 30/30. And if I remember correctly, Berry is the lowest quality imaginable, same as Frontier. Correct me if I am wrong. Are the both made in South Africa?
I would look for a bulk deal on a higher quality, US-made bullets in 125gr instead.

Lyman's 311359 is excellent in the 30/30, 115 grs. pointed and gas checked, load one in the chamber and one in the tube mag.`

I can't speak about the Frontier products, but Berry's Bullets are made in the USA.

The 30 Carbine would be a fine home defense cartridge with 110 grain JSP at 2000-2200 FPS. A 30-30 could easily replicate that load. You can also load it up with 100 grain Hornady Short Jackets or 100 grain Speer Plinkers.

110's work great in my 30-30. I have used lots of Berry's in the past, but if you want a really good 110 look for 110 FMJ from ARMSCOR (Phillipines). They make them for the M1 30 cal. They are very accurate and fairly inexpensive. I buy them in boxes of 1000 and use them in both my 30-30 and my M1 Garand as plinking bullets out past 100 yards.

Chronograph data from my 1942 Winchester 94 with 20”barrel:

Remington 110-gr. JSP (.30 M1 Carbine)

28 grs. IMR4198 2359 fps, 32 Sd – explosive varmint performance, requires re-zeroing from factory 150s

5.0 Bullseye, 1039 fps, 10 Sd – on at 50 ft. if zeroed +3-4” at 100 with 150-gr. factory SPs, quiet. Minimum charge to exit barrel reliably with jacketed bullet.

6.0 Bullseye, 1232 fps, 26 Sd – nondestructive small game load as in .32-20, no expansion.

7.0 Bullseye, 1396 fps, 14 Sd – noticeably louder than subsonic load, but more accurate, 1” groups 50 yards

Accurate 31-115K “Winchester Small Game” LFN, wheelweights, unsized .311”, LLA

3.5 grs. Bullseye, 901 fps, 11 Sd - 3” low at 25 yds. “Cat Sneeze”, minimum to reliably exit barrel with lubricated lead bullet.

5.0 grs. Bullseye, 1207 fps, 9 Sd – 1” groups at 50 yds. Mild, quiet, like .22 LR HV, minimum to exit barrel with jacketed bullet.

6.0 grs. Bullseye, 1350 fps, 6 Sd – shoots flatter, louder, like .32-20. Max. for accurate load for a plain-base cast bullet
