Cheap and easy crimp removal

Being the frugal type we tend to be on this site I though I would pass in a easy and simple way I made a little do dad for removing the primer crimp on a box load of 223 brass I just got . Yeah there's lots of ways drill bit , counter sink , ect I always used a drill bit but never liked the angle it cut so I went poking around looking for something else and I found a 1/4 drive philips head driver bit . The angle fit well at just cut the crimp out and not a lot of the pocket or the case head . Just needed to sharpen it up some so it cut well. I heated it up with a propane torch to a aneal it as it's very hard as is . Just used a small file and beveled the top of the four splines so they were sharp on the left hand edge . I just chuck it up in my cordless drill and pull the trigger as a press the primer pocket into it . Costs nothing as we all have a few extra bits laying around .Hope this may help someone with this unpleasant task of brass prepping military cases .

If I did many with one of those , I would have to figure out a way to put a knob on it.😥

Ditto.... it takes very little effort to remove the crimp, it bevels the primer pocket slightly, and it wont loosen your primer pocket.... like some swages will do.

I use a torx bit.

I chamfer with a RCBS deburring tool chucked into a cordless drill.

I have a Hornady primer pocket go-no go gauge. Quick and easy to use.

If the primer pocket is still tight as in the case of some European brass (Fiocchi is the prime offender I find) I have the Hornady primer pocket reaming tool that I also chuck into drill.

I used a pocket knife early on in my primer pocket deburring/chamfering, then I tried a countersink (I already had a few in my tool box and they work perfectly)...

I bought a used Dillon super swage. But once, cry once. I’ve used a chamfer tool but i could never get even cutting with it. I would have some primer picket holes with beveled angles. I figured there wasn’t enough pressure to hold some of those primers and then they’re gonna pop out eventually when firing. I also learned with my super swage that I have to swage each case twice or I still get primers that are hard to seat.

I use a Sinclair primer pocket reamer with their drill adapter. Works excellent on military .30 cal cases. After several years and thousands of cases, it's still cutting very good.

I still use the RCBS primer pocket swagger that I got in the 1970's, it has seen a lot of use and still works great and is properly currently worth more than I paid for it.

i just use the rcbs chamfer tool ....the pointy small end.

i have a mini clock makers lathe ....just chuck it up and let it spin, can do 100 in 5 mins.

I use the chamfer bit on my Frankford Arsenal case trim and prep center

The Hornady primer pocket reamer is another good one. It’s made of hardened tool steel and is very sharp. It’s not possible to over cut with it because it bottoms out in the primer pocket.

ive actually bought two of them. First one I bought off ebay used. I had about 2k of brass to do and at the time (one ar15) I thought it would last a liftetime so I payed 50 bucks used it and sold it for 50 bucks. Found out later (14 ar15s) that 2k of brass is nothing so I bought another one and will hang on to it.

Years ago I picked up a bunch of Lyman ends and pieces - included was the primer pocket cleaner and primer pocket reamer. I use the reamer on military brass and on S&B brass. Once and done. Yes, it chucks in my drill motor.
