I finally found a H&R Buffalo Classic for sale in my area. Hope to pick up this Wednesday. What would be a good cast bullet load to start out with?

Ask that question of twenty different BPCR shooters and you'll get, at least, 19 different answers. FWIW, either a Lyman 457124 (400 gr from 50/50 COWW and range scrap) or the Lee 457-405-F over 13-14 gr. of Unique (no filler) will pretty much duplicate the Trapdoor Carbine Load. Moderate recoil and reasonably accurate in all of my .45-70s (including a repro Trapdoor).

x2 on the Unique load for 405grs and I also use 15 grs for 300-350gr bullets I cast. Every one of my 45/70's shoot these loads very well, especially my H&R Buffalo Hunter. I killed a big doe this evening with the 350gr Lyman/Gould hollow point and 15 gr Unique load, zipped thru both shoulder and the spine as well, DRT.
Yep! 13-16 guns unique!
457-405-F with 70 gr.of pyrodex RS by volume that is what I used in mine.
Thanks for all the replies. I been using Unique in my CVA. But I was thinking of using black powder. I have some Alliance Black MZ I thought of trying.
