All I did was soak the hide in a plastic trash can with water and lime powder from the hardware store.
It is just ground up marble, and is also used for pickles.
I'd soak it for about 10 days, and poke it every couple days to sort of stir it.
And keep a brick on top so it all stays under water.
The lime makes the hair turn loose.
Lay it out, scrap the fur off, rinse it in fresh water,
cut it into strips 2-3 inches wide, long enough to tie a knot in, and let it dry in the sun.
They look better if you stretch them out, but the dog didn't care.
