Determining proper ring height on a 1917

I just purchased a sporterized Eddystone with no iron sights and Weaver bases on the ground receiver.

This is my first time for this type of scope mounting.

I measured the distance from the top of the Weaver mounts to the top of barrel where the scope bell will impinge. I did this with a straight edge on the upper ledge of the bases extending over the chamber area and using a caliper.

This base height is .362" above the top of barrel at chamber area.
The scope bell is 2.00" (44mm obj)
The scope tube is 1.00"
I think that leaves .138" or more that I need the rings to raise the scope.

I have looked at the various calculators online and searched here, but I guess I am just too dense to see the pattern.

How do I take that value and translate into low, med. high rings.

None of the 1917's that I have had actually wore a scope, although one of my projects will when I get around to finishing it.

Medium rings tend to let 40mm objectives clear the barrel on most sporting rifles, so I think they should have more than enough clearance for your 1917. Were you may run into problems is the ocular (rear) bell. I have had to go to higher rings on several rifles when I changed to a newer scope.

What clears just fine with low rings and a steel tubed Weaver K4 doesn't work so well with a Leupold 2-7X.

I had mine redo the rear receiver ring and used steel weaver grand slam bases and burris zee rings medium size Most of the rear receiver ring had already been chopped off and just started filing away and checking the alignment with a straightedge. This let the smith continue to lower it just a bit more as I had told him what I had done. In reality he said I was very close to where it should be. Frank
