I want to load some 357 with 158 grain coated lead boolits. I have H110 and 2400 powder. I've been reading 2400 may be a better choice. Do I need magnum primers? If so, will my small rifle primers suffice? I have no small magnums and not sure of availability in my area. This will be a sub 500 test run. Thanks
NO. I used 2400 in the 357 magnum and had no issues with igniting 2400 even down to -20 degrees with standard small pistol primers.

Alliant web site indicates small pistol primers for 2400, not magnum.
I've used both. I've had better accuracy with std sm pistol primers. IIRC, Alliant is adamant one NOT use mag primers with 2400. That might have been Lyman or RCBS or a different bullet mfr though. In my notes somewhere.... Seems the consensus is std is the way to go.

I'm with the majority, no magnum primers needed. You did mean small pistol instead of small rifle right?
2400 does not require mag primers & definitely do not use small rifle primers!

No mag primer needed with 2400. If you do use a mag primer, redevelop your load as things get hot quick.
I use standard small pistol primers in my .357s regardless if loading with 2400 or Unique, the two powders I use for this caliber.
Yep, I've loaded 2400 for years in .357 and I used to use CCI 550 primers but now for a long time just use CCI 500 or WIN. SP, and I get good results. A lot of the older manuals say to use magnum.
I use standard primers with #2400 in the .357. However, I did testing several years ago using eight primers (standard and magnum) in a 6" Python with my standard load - 12 grains #2400 and an H&G #51 158 grain SWC. Granted, this is hair splitting for sure, but I got slightly better accuracy ( around 1/4" to 1/2") at 25 yards with magnum primers in all instances but one: there was about a 3/4" advantage when using Winchester standard SP over the magnum version. Five, five-shot groups were fired with every combination.
I was under the impression that if you used a magnum primer lower the load by 1 grain.
