ignorance is bliss, so while others joke we will enjoy the merits they do have. Lets see very nice and light for carry, best milsurp trigger when polished, bolt face takes really neat cartridges when rebarrelling, scoping is easy with intermediate scope, not bad on checking account generally. Thanks for the info!
I have about 15 different model Carcano's and find with the right bullet and
powder combo, they shoot very well. I use nothing but cast bullets in them
as the bullet diameter has to between .268 to .270 diameter to shoot well.
Carcano bores are .268 dia. for the most part, and that's why .264 dia. bullets
don't shoot worth a damn in them. That's why most get a bad rap in the
shooting accuracy.

Prices are moving up from what I have seen. Somebody likes them.
When I was in college, just a few years ago, I borrowed a 6.5 Carcano sporter from a friend for my first year of mule deer hunting. That was back when you could still get boxes of reloads at the gun store. Testing it out at about eighty yards, I could get cloverleaf groups with it. I thought it was a fine rifle, although the ammo looked rather odd, compared to say, a 30-06 or something similar.

Worked with a few over the years and currently playing with a long rifle I have in.
With a bore in reasonable condition they are like all rifles, with good boolit fit they can shoot pretty well.
I don't drive them much over 18-19000 fps as that is all I need for target shooting out to 600yrds, consistent 100 yrd 4" groups should be relatively easy to get. Better is possible but the sights and my eyes works against that.
I now it's a typo, but wow... if that were possible, especially with a Carcano, everyboby would want one!Quote:

What powder did you use to get to 19,000fps? How much? Boolit type? Mold? Lube? Alloy type?

Attachment 120445Attachment 120446I have a M91 Carcano that will hold 3" groups or less at 100m using a 150gn, cut down Lee `Cruise Missile` bullet, gas checked to .2695 with 11.0gn of GM3 in Privi brass. The m/v averages out at 1475 fps.

Are there any problems or advantages associated with the Carcano's "gain twist" rifling when shooting cast?
Are any special tips or tricks needed?
Not if you don't push them to fast.....

I know what you mean about the sights and sadly my eyes no longer do as well
with open sights as they did even a year or two ago.
Got started with a pair of the 91 carbines my brother bought mail order for $10 each
in the mid 60s when lots of the good Italian ammo was available. They shot well but
recently with only the Norma out there with too small bullets, their reputation has
suffered a lot. With the newer Hornady proper ammo, this is being corrected.

I jusy bought the Lee infamous "Cruise Missile" and will try it full length in my Carcano and Arisaka and if it does not shoot good will have the top of the mold milled down. At $20 if it gets screwed up no great loss.
