i was wondering if anyone has tried loading a CB over Hodgdon 'lil gun in .38 spl?
i was looking through the lee load manual and noticed in the 32H&R magnum data that lil gun is interesting for a "magnum" powder. for an 85gn jacketed bullet it has the highest velocity, and gets there with about 20% less pressure, 16,800 CUP compared to 20k +/- for the other powders. the other thing i noticed is that the starting charge is a full 12.5% reduction from max, which without doing the math, is some SERIOUSLY low pressure for such a slow powder to be properly burning at.
then, for something more relevant, i flipped over to the 158gn xtp in 357 mag. and all i can say is WOW. lil gun sends that slug zipping along at 1577 fps while only making 25,800 CUP, while H110 only gains 14fps at 40,700 CUP
all this is making me think that 'lil gun might be a good option for developing an updated "fbi" load, as well as for magnum CB loads in general.
