I recently acquired a promelt that had been put up for awhile. Turns out the switch is bad. Call to RCBS and the cs representative offered to send me new switch. Turns out there is a disconnect between the cs and parts depts as the packing slip said "this part no longer available". Ok does anyone have an idea where I might be able to find a switch? Thanks for any help in advance
Is the switch also the temperature switch or just the one and off switch?

If it's just the on/off switch then most any "SPST" switch (single pole, single throw i.e. it connects one wire when ON) should do the job (Unless it switches both sides of power, which is safer so some companies do that, if so it'd be a DPST (double pole, single throw) switch.)
You'd want one rated for your AC mains voltage and that would happily handle the full current of your ProMelt; Not remembering what current those draw ATM.
Lots of electronics places out there still, just not many Radio Shacks any more, but Digikey, Mouser, Element 14/Newark, and Allied are certainly still around and would have thousands of these switches in stock.
I just ordered and received a couple of Gardner Bender GSW-42 Electrical Appliance Rocker Switch, SPST, ON-OFF, 16 A/125V AC, Spade Terminal, Red Illuminated switches from amazon for $1.30 each as Add On item. I have never needed to get into my Pro Melt but I would assume it is just a simple on/off switch like this.
The original Pro Melt has an illuminated rocker switch. 2 of the connections are Power from the Thermostat and Power to the Heater. The Third connection is a Neutral to run the light. DO Not connect the Neutral to the Power connection on the switch or you will blow your house breaker. The Neutral (from the power plug) is usually White and connects to the heating element and the Switch Light.
You can use a plain SPST switch, just tape up the end of the unused Neutral wire.
Oh yea. A sharp wood chisel will shear the pop rivets easier than drilling.
It's easy to open (see ^) and work on. I like the original Pro-Melt much better than the new PM2 but that's just me.
built my own PID and it will hold temp within 1°
my only problem with it is after casting for 45 minutes the pot is almost empty :D
Walter Laich - You see, that is exactly why people offer small children in trades on here. Just accept one and next time you are casting, you can have them shove small chunks of the same alloy you are casting with, into the pot - Automagically keeping your pot full! True, you do have to feed them, provide them with meals, a place to sleep, parenting, and proper protective gear, but in turn you can teach a new caster the ropes, starting with keeping the pot full; It's a win-win :)
